With autopickup, energy taken is lower than expected - 1.2.0 p3 mac
without auto pickup, energy for move an pickup is move cost + 1000. With autopickup, it's move cost * 2

Not sure if this is already reported.

repro:
1) Get a character with 7lb, or other way to reduce move cost.
2) enable auto-pickup.
3) set :t to display energy cost
4) Move over object to pick it up.
Bug: energy cost is 2 * move cost.
Expected: energy cost is 1000 + move cost, as if you did the two actions together.

In the extreme case, (leveled beastfighter with blessed 7lb and 950 base move cost) move and pickup costs 809 energy, less than dong pickup alone.

It appears to be the real energy cost, as monsters behave as if they had a small time-slice.

addendum:
missile reload also behaves similar.
Manual reload cost 1000.
answering Y to a new ammo set the general cost to 2 * fire energy use.

I'll post the same comment as I did to the newer duplicate of this bug report (http://www.adom.de/forums/project.php?issueid=1696)

I'm not so sure that it would be necessary to change these.

For autopickup, your character's mind is already set on picking up these things, he does it automatically without thinking much. He's done it so many times, it's part of his routine. He just swoops it up while he passes, instead of really checking what it is.

Similar reasoning can be done with reload_missiles. Your archer is well aware that he will soon be out of arrows, and have prepared to refill with whatever is hanging on the backpack. This is something that an archer has done many times, and could be reflected in the reduced time it takes to do it mid-shooting compared to checking your backpack for options.

I'll add some here too. Walking is much faster and easier to do than picking up items, no matter how often you practice it.

I'll accept reloading though, a decent archer will load faster with practice. Although reloading from inventory 'I' still takes normal action cost, why is it not also reduced there either.

See, so this bug report does have a vilid point.

This might be a good place to mention that bumping into a wall lets you use autopickup without any time passing at all.

To me both of these are just interface conveniences. Using auto pickup should be exactly the same as picking up manually. It's just interface. If it indeed is supposed to set your character in some mental mood, there should also be downsides. Halved perception, less DV, more chance of criticals, more chance of punch-through-armor and so on.

I like that behavior, I hope it can stay.
