[BUG] Monsters that picked up artifacts can escape when panicking and items will be lost.

I have yet to confirm if this is indeed a bug or intended behavior, although I can't imagine how this could be deliberate:

I summoned greater molochs in the barbarian's glade by wishing for emperor moloch.
Then I froze the river and proceeded to throw the rune-covered trident at them.
At one point, the trident did not return and one of the greater molochs picked it up.
I started bolting them with magic missiles and some of them panicked, including the one that picked up my trident.
He then subsequently left the location and I permanently lost the weapon.
That's quite annoying since I specifically took raven starsign to get the artifact earlier and use it throughout the game.
Then this happens.

Perhaps it could 'cout' a special message in a similar way it happens with companions who die.

something like:

"You have the feeling of an enormous loss." - A monster escapes with an artifact in the distance.

"As you watch the *foo* running away, you get a major, grieving sensation of something being really amiss!" - Monster escapes in front of your eyes with an artifact.

Monsters that have escaped with artifacts could become random encounters for that wilderness area, like companions that have gotten left behind. This could be annoying, but much less annoying than just losing the thing...

Another +1 to this idea. I haven't lost any artifacts this way (I usually just die) but heck, I like this idea

+1 from here as well. In general it's quite crazy that monsters that panic, always start it with picking up random muck from where they are, instead of immediately running away.

Fixed. Artifact-carrying monsters now become wilderness traveller and can return later.
