Stronger Race/Class Recommendations

The "recommended" race/class notes on the character selection menu are a nice touch, but the game could go farther in that direction.

After you select your race, the recommended classes for that race should be highlighted. You can still pick a non-recommended class if you want, but newbies who are experimenting would be given more help than just the three paltry recommended combinations that the game currently offers. What if one of them wants a melee character, for example, but doesn't feel like playing a Paladin? Of course, you should be able to disable this feature if you don't want it.

And yes, I know most of us on this forum have been playing ADOM for years and already know the "best" race/class combinations, and thus wouldn't give the first molecule of crap about this feature or ever use it. It's not for us. This would be something to help make ADOM a little more newbie-friendly... an issue that will be important once ADOM gets past Greenlight and has all kinds of new people giving it a look. Anything that will help these newcomers learn the ropes is good!

The problem is that it's really hard to define a recommended class for any specific race - the game is very heavily weighted towards classes determining what is good with race (helping determine stats/skills/equipment) a much more secondary determinant. For example, any good class is good on a drake, or a dwarf, or etc. I think the suggestions are fine as-is.

So, I don't think this is really possible.

Interesting aspect of this would be to decide what is recommended from a newbie's point of view. As ADoM is game of many deaths ;) a character difficult to die with would be a good start. So, troll of any kind. But once you hit mid-game, troll may not look like such a great choice due to slower leveling. Same with class, for starters I'd suggest something starting with a lot of armour. So a melee class. But as soon as you figure out how not to die horribly, magic classes are clearly better.

(Not to mention archers >> all :P)

As an aside, this works in DCSS for a very specific reason: both race and class have aptitudes in skills that interact. Your Ice Elementalist is going to suck if they have a -4 aptitude in Ice Magic as a result of the race. While you could say that an analogous situation exists in ADOM (races and classes having skills), a lot of skills play much less of a role in ADOM and not having synergized skills is NBD for your class. You don't need to double up on Find Weakness or Alertness for most classes [absent some with really bad dice rolls, like Necromancers] to be able to use the skill at a high level. So a framework in which this would make sense to implement doesn't exist for ADOM.

Good points; SirTheta. Skills have low impact on the game, with the exception of Concentration and Healing. The racial healing rate for classes without the Healing skill has a bigger impact than skill synergy.
