Nerf Cursed Potion of Invisiblity

Currently, a cursed potion of invisibility is one of the most overpowered items in all of ADOM. If the potion is cursed, it can be thrown at *any* enemy to cause a blinding effect, rendering them unable to cast spells, walk normally, or fight effectively. Most monsters under this effect will only hit you about 1/3 as often as they would without being blind. The most egregious problem with this item is that it works on *all* bosses, including Andor Drakon himself! Using the potion on Andor makes the fight ridiculously easy, and is kind of anti-climactic for what's supposed to be a fight over the fate of the world.

My suggestion is this: Make cursed potions of invisiblity work *only* on non-boss monsters. Monsters like Andor, Keriax, the Ancient Chaos Wyrm, etc. should all be immune to the effect.

EDIT: As Grond mentioned below, this should probably apply to all items that can cause blindness.

So make them immune to blindness or have some special interaction with cursed potion of invisibility? Other means of blinding monsters exist (potion of blindness, cursed potions of raw mana, acid blood, acid cloak); I think it would be rather illogical to just have a special case for cursed invisibility.

I agree with you Grond, while I didn't specifically say it, I guess the RFE is more directed towards the blindness debuff rather than specifically a cursed potion of invisiblity. Thank you for clarifying that.

The Creator
I found one bug and diversified several places. And made unique monsters (and especially Andor Drakon) somewhat more resistant.

Definitely can't agree with this.
Potions of invisibility are not exactly plentiful.
They should be reserved for special cases - such as boss monsters.
Making boss monsters immune to them turns them into useless potions.

Sinsi: Not true at all, they still work on literally everything else. Are you not a fan of challenging boss fights? Because blindness as it was previously made every fight easy as can be.

P.S. The Creator's changes are perfect IMO, blindness still works on nearly all bosses, they are just more resistant (works about 50% of the time).

Yes, they work. But since there are like 10 copies of "anything else" for each cursed potion of invisibility you find, you have to cope with it without using potion of invisibility most of the time.
So they don't serve to solve any problems.

They solve plenty of problems, *still* including boss problems. There are also more ways to make creatures blind than just cursed potions of invis, as Grond mentioned. It sounds like you want a potion that turns any fight into a non-fight, which I wholeheartedly disagree with. Once again, I think the changes implemented here are perfect.

If boss monsters can easily be blinded by cursed potions of invis, then they are not really much of a boss...

I think there needs to be at least some resistance, otherwise there isn't any challenge to it.

You have a problem with blindness working on bosses? Well, here's a suggestion. Don't use blinding attacks on them.

Kahran: This will be my last post on the matter. I personally prefer the game with a bit of challenge, and artificially restricting my item use because some items break the game and I want to actually enjoy it is a stupid idea. I like having to utilize actual strategy for these bosses, rather than just toss the *same* potion at every single one to instantly win. If you prefer an easier game mode, you can play exploration mode or standard mode, but I will continue to argue for good game balance.

I don't use cursed potions of invisibility like that either, but that doesn't mean I want to stop other people from having the option of using them.

Actually, I can't use those modes, because they're only in ADOM Deluxe, Steam isn't compatible with OS X 10.6.8, and I can't just go updating my system for one game.

The problem with going with the “honor” system is that while a couple people would not use them, many others would see it as an easy way to get a win.

Adom is designed to be a challenge, and having the potions not work as easily as before is a good decision. It forces the player to take another option besides going “lol I’ll just blind them”. Having a cheap strategy like that ruins the fun of the game, and it definitely needed to be changed.

Mind you, it’s STILL an option, it’s just not as effective, so you must prepare with a backup in case it doesn’t work.

Potions are rare. They take up valuable weight, and are prone to destruction.
And your reward for that is a few turns where the boss is not as scary - you still have to kill him yourself.

But now they don't even guarantee that?

Post-nerf cursed invisbility is still really strong. It's a few turns of the boss not casting spells and you doing way more melee damage due to backstabs; often only a single successful potion is needed. And potion of invisibility is *not* uncommon - I have plenty to spare pretty much every game, even without doing stuff like taking treasure hunter, scumming the guaranteed potion shop for restocks, or buying out the casino. It's possible you can get super unlucky now and have to use a backup strategy, but this change didn't exactly nerf blindness into unusability.
