neutral v hostile combat makes the neutral hostile

If an enemy that doesn't care about you engages in combat with an enemy hostile to you, and gets hit, they turn hostile as well (might be because it responds to them taking damage without considering the source of the damage?)

This is how it's always worked.
It's a game mechanic, not a bug.

Then this mechanic is wrong. The fact it's always been like that doesn't give it any legitimacy.
How is this ever a desirable mechanism?

Unless we're talking about a situation where both monsters would be hostile to the PC but only one noticed the PC, due to stealth.
I've seen that situation many times though that would still be a bug in my opinion, as the hostile one should not be attacking the neutral one out of the blue, just because the PC has shown up.

"Always worked" isn't an excuse. Also this doesn't seem to be intentional anyhow, there is no logical explanation. Likely this is just a bug that was always there.

Interesting fact about this: if the npc achieves a 1-hit-kill on the other, the one that remains standing will not turn hostile.
