I don't think the immunity is fixed. I remember in older versions save-scumming to get fire immunity. May have been changed as of 1.2, though.

Killed the Archmage. Melee'd most of the monsters, corrupting ones got wand of fireball'ed. Had to lure the archmage out of the temple area so I could acid-ball him to death. I also got 2 levels out...
It also helps train literacy, as those scrolls don't disappear when read in the SMC.
I try to enter the SMC at level 1, or really any low level, then come back later. Preferably with teleport.
