a) eliminate them all(not that bad with bolt spells)
b) trap them in a room with closed doors - they'll duplicate to fill the room...

Oops - my mistake. Silfir did a mission 2, not a mission 3, and it was with Jharod, and Cortain is the one that's available for mission 3.

Lesser vaults are always in a corner. The stairs are never behind them, AFAIK. It feels like (I'm not 100% sure) that the dungeon generator guarantees room connectivity around the vault.
