Default Create Item Spell: How useful is this?

So I have had some time this weekend and I've made another promising character and I managed to come across a spellbook of create item. I've never seen this puppy before and I'm courious to learn more about it?
Like will it create better items each time you use it? Can it create artifacts? Can I pick what item to make with it? I haven't tried it myself yet but anything that might be helpful about this item would be great thanks?

It generates a random item that can be generated on current level (including wish-granting items). As far as I know the spell can't create artifacts but I have heard that the scroll can.

As far as my knowledge goes, it simply creates an item on the designated square corresponding to the current level's danger level, as if you just killed a monster and had a drop. Due to the game's drop mechanics, regardless of where you do it you will still get more or less unspectacular drops such as gold and leather caps, being on a higher danger level just expands the pool. I'm not aware of effects that would increase the quality of the item depending on spell effectivity.

The spell is mostly good for only one thing: Being cast to empty the mana pool in order to train the Mana stat. It costs loads of PP, so emptying your mana pool consumes few turns, you don't lose casting points for actually useful spells, and at the very least you get one item, whereas casting something similar useless like Know Alignment over and over gets you carpal tunnel syndrome at best.

Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.

Dunno if the spell can give artifacts, but I got the BoW from reading a scroll in the Mana Temple.

The scroll can indeed generate artifacts, I once got purifier from one.

while wandering in dwarven hall, whith a lvl 24 hurtling wiz, i've book cast al lot of time this spell to train mana
Obtained toons of crap, BUT also: phase daggers, interesting potions (quick.blood, excange, raw mana, strenght ecc..) a good pile of rings and wands but no Rods or 7LB
good if you want to start a wish engine and want to collect some uselness rings

Tested: scroll creates artifact with ~1/1000 chance, while spell cannot create artifacts (at least none was generated during 10000 castings)

Which is to say, the manual is correct.

As for the original question, the only thing it's good for is massively training Mana via bookcasting.

If you're desperate for Ultra ending, it's sometimes a chance to generate a ?oDanger while bookcasting it in Terinyo mana-isle

I usually find at least a few of those (and wands of monster creation) with every PC that gets somewhere. But that's obviously because I have no intention of doing an ultra
