Thread: Unusual error? The game won't run at all.

Default Unusual error? The game won't run at all.

I registered for the forum so that I could ask for advice on this particular issue, so I apologize if I'm posting outside an appropriate area.

For no apparent reason, ADOM will not run on my laptop, which is a MacBook running OS 10.4.11, if it's relevant. I've tried downloading each of the releases in turn, as well as deleting and re-downloading the latest one a few times. When I double click on the application icon, or try to open it through the terminal, the icon goes into the start-up animation, but then nothing happens. If I put the app in the dock, clicking on it makes it bounce once and stop. It's not listed among my running processes, either.

I've tried looking for mention of this problem in the forum and elsewhere online, but am somewhat at a loss as to what search terms to use-- no matter how many times I download and try to run it, through every method I know, it just...won't...work.

I'd be very appreciative of any help anyone could provide-- I'd really like to play ADOM and I've been trying, off an on, for weeks with only mysterious failure. Thanks in advance.

just a question : did you use terminal to find and delete the data folder? i remember that a faulty .svg edition (i love testing) did that thing to me too.

No, I haven't deleted the data file-- do you think I should try that, or was it a possible cause of the failure to launch?

I don't know about Macs but with Windows the game (sometimes?) creates adom.prc file when it crashes, try deleting that.

Delete it, you can copy paste your important saves on your deck. Remember, delete the whole folder to be sure. But it will delete the .cnt file, which closes the bug temple, you may want to copy paste that too.
You shouldn't ave to redownload the game if it's that, jsut delete and launch the game, the game will automatically create the folder with the important files, you can then put the ones you previoulsy copy pasted into it. If it then bugs again, that means that one of those files is buggy, so try without each of them succeedingly.

    Hope for you it's that.

Hm, I'm not saying this could not be blamed on my Unix abilities or lack thereof, but I (and my terminal) cannot find any data files associated with ADOM. I searched for all files ending with .data and no sign of ADOM-- if I try to open the folder containing the application through terminal, I'm informed it does not exist...and neither does the app itself. It definitely does exist and is taking up about five megabytes of "hammer space" at the moment. . . .

If it's important, I've never run ADOM on this computer before, so if it's a file the game itself will generate upon opening or running, I probably don't have it-- it's never actually run.

So thank you for all the ideas, but, got any more? I'm dying to play!

It is important if it never ran on your comp. Still, try
    open /Users/whateveryournameis/.adom.data

    Ah, I figured. :\

Thanks. I tried, but it says the file does not exist. What I find most confusing is that the application never reports crashing or gives any indication it has failed to run other than the fact that it doesn't do anything, ever (and never has). Nonetheless it does run well on my friend's MacBook on the same operating system I use. It's as if the necessary files were all under witness protection.

Check if the files are hidden. Don't know why but I think I've read somewhere that files are hidden in macs. I might be wrong, in that case just ignore me.

most files aren't for me, especially those marked .exe
When in darkness, you can always see the light (unless you're in ADOM)

Most successful combos for me: Grey elf wizards, trollish healers, dark elf beast-fighters, Gnomey monks, and any race barbarians.
