what does it do, i found it in munix;s shop $299,000
The worst artifact in the game imo... I think a nice improvement would be if you could somehow choose the spell you want to learn
I'd say the gloves are, but that's IMAO
When in darkness, you can always see the light (unless you're in ADOM)
Most successful combos for me: Grey elf wizards, trollish healers, dark elf beast-fighters, Gnomey monks, and any race barbarians.
Nah the gloves are fine for a non-melee char like a wizard because they still give [+15,+3] which is pretty good and various resistances whereas just holding the black tome corrupts you, iirc it only teaches you one random spell before corrupting you just for reading it, not to mention spellbooks are fairly easy to come across.
The only good thing about it is that i think you get a lawful boost if you sacrifice it.
Yes, unless of course you got it as a "divine" gift (more like spring cleaning)

I think Cat's Claw is the worst artifact in the game.
I can at least imagine using the tome sometimes.
Well, I used Cat's Claw for the Dx bonus with a shooty thief.
I think that the Black Tome is under-estimated in power. Surely, it grants you corruptions ; but one must keep in mind that corruptions, even thougt risky, CAN be a means of power it self. Thougt this would require some extensive work (Such as SoCR or the likes if you get a nasty one), it can acctualy become quite a powerful tool if one is creative enough.
I've won with the following classes ; Monk and Bard.
Doorsfan: is this out of practical experience, or just a thought? If you found a use for it in a real game (other than throwing it on D:49 ) I'd be impressed. Remember that if you really want to be corrupted, it is easy to create a corruption trap..
You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.
