I do it only when roleplaying good guys. When I am evil, I kill all the cats I see.

I usually try to get it, unless its a choice between PC dying and killing the cat. (At low levels sometimes it's a necessity.)
I even got it once after killing a cave lion in the Arena.
I always try to get it. I tend to go to ridiculous lengths in my measures not to kill cats, and sometimes I die due to that. I know it's not the best thing to do, it's just irrational perfectionism, but that's how I am.
I always try for it, but I hold down the arrow keys, so I usually kill one eventually. I always sneak past the Cat Lord- cause I am a wussy chicken. I have never gotten the ring.
Closers- GE Wizard, DE Beastfighter, DE Barb
Ultras- DE Barb ULE
OCG- Maybe someday
ADOM projects- Overheat style LP -maybe.
I rarely bother. By the time I reach Master Cat, my PC is usually strong enough that the effects of the ring aren't that useful anymore.
And playing doomed, I just can't risk having a cat chase me around in the early game...
Hoping to win with every class, doomed. Archer, Barbarian, Bard, Beastfighter, Druid, Elementalist, Farmer, Fighter, Monk, and ULE Priest down.
I am full of hate for the cat lord. First time I descended that deep, he sneaked upon me invisible and disassembled my body parts ... and in general I despise the idea of bowing to some moron in order to get something, be it whatever. And one of my ex girlfriends loved cats sooo much. And and and its a computer game, so I can do what I want without consequences.
I usually go for the RoTMC, but if i kill a cat, it usually turns into a cat killing rampage, just so i can get SOME exp from that Cat Lord fellow. I think this game, he gave me less exp than the Casino Shopkeeper. (Casino gave Lvl24 => Lvl29, Cat Lord gave 29 => 30.)
I always go for the ring, but I don't stress myself if I accidently kill a cat. I may say a silent curse (cringing my teeth) but nothing more.. :-)
The ring is one of the best artifacts, indeed.. but my PC's who haven't got it haven't had any problems winning the game..
I never go for the ring. I usually see the Cat Lord as a inconvinient bump of XP - and cats.. Well. I'll put it this way.
Imagine having a bad monday - the coffee tastes crap, rough time getting up and you realize your work just sucks plain ass. Every single cat i encounter, is much like that. And there for, i swat them *SPLAT*.
I've won with the following classes ; Monk and Bard.
