    Default Trapped!

    I stepped down the stairs to find myself 'Truly Excited'. Then I take two steps and find myself surrounded by very experienced ghosts. By the time I was on the stairs again, one was right next to me. As I went up, it hit me, putting me at 'Old'. Now I have no clue how to kill the thing before I become a dusty pile of bones. I could go to Berserk and fire my undead arrow at it (lucky I left it equipped after a single ghost lord a few levels up), but if I miss, I'd die. Normally, I'd set myself to Coward and cast Dispel Undead at him, but considering I was on 'Coward' when he hit me before...

    Any chance I could get a bit of advice on this situation? I can't see much of a way out of it, and I don't want to die. Before the 'obvious' answer; it's the Air Temple, so I can't teleport.

    Also, how the hell will I get past that level in the future? There are ghosts literally surrounding the stairs. I'd be dead within a turn of going down there.

    Good sir, your speed seems to be over 140 - ghosts aren't nearly that fast. Step down and to the right, then to the right, then up and to the right. You should be able to get enough distance between you and him to berserk and blast him into scraps of negative energy fairly easily.

    Good luck with the big pile of them upstairs though =(

    Lots and lots and lots of fireballs, hoping for the best?

    Also... If the lower level has a greater vault then you know already in which part of the level it is located. Once you've entered you can instantly teleport away from the stairs and hopefully the ghosts - maybe you get one turn to cast magic mapping? - and scramble for the stairs. Then it's only a matter of finishing the rest of the game. Once you return you have a) already won and b) achieved level 50.

    You will if you have a source of invisibility. Just bolt
    them all to death, nothing could be easier. Ghosts don't
    see invisible unless you melee them, missile them, or
    ball spell them, that grants them the 'see invis' intrinsic,
    somehow. Unfortunately, you didn't list your potions, so
    I'll have to assume no invis. In my opinion, your best
    option is to use offense. Like Xanthine says, you have
    great speed, and you also have great DV to back it. I
    think it was a fluke you got hit. As for what to use, I
    wonder if the dispel undead spell would work so great,
    considering it's only at effectivity 8. How well has it
    worked in the past? Maybe consider using the powers
    of the Fire Orb.

    DV 130, speed 141. Don't see how you're in trouble. =P

    Try moving down, zapping wand of digging, and moving down again.

    Thanks people. Seems you were right about the lucky hit, and the speed. He was tough though - an 'exact hit' on him, with the undead slaying arrows, only took him to 'Severely'. The second one killed him though.

    I don't have a good handle on the experienced versions of monsters, to be honest. I get vaguely scared when a goblin rockthrower starts taking 5 hits before he goes down. Whereas I have a good sense of how strong a 'normal' ghost is, the experienced ones throw me for a loop. I probably need more experience in the endgame!

    And thanks for the advice about being invisible - I had no clue ghosts couldn't see invis (though I am fond of ADOM's monster memory, I wouldn't mind a few of Angband's MM features being implemented). The teleport advice wouldn't have done much good I'm afraid - no teleport control, all game! Luckily though, when I get back there I should be fast enough to run, as I'm currently slaughtering killer bugs like a lunatic.
