Samoht, the grey elf elementalist got precrowned with hammer of the gods and raised wi/dx/to to 25-27. The book shop provided spells like strength of atlas, acid bolt and magic missile. The pyramid and dwarven graveyard were cleared easily and the ud was actually unremarkable. He passed the animated forest without trouble.

Then the power was cut and all was lost.

Rolled a Helf Priest, but work keeps getting in the way of playing. Stupid stupid work.

Sure, I'll participate. Rolled a Tree-born female orcish beastfighter. Dumb as a rock, strong as an ox. Strangely afraid of getting old. I'll update this post as I play, which I can't do right now due to being overwhelmed at work.

Hah. Caught between a named ogre magus (guarding Executor, as I came to find out later... damn beastfighters) and a room full of worms on UD3.

Past the casino, just saw one of my few eternium golems. I bought out two book shops (located on neighbouring levels) and guess which spell wasn't in them?

Oh yeah I still have that leftover wish. But I wanted to use that for potions of youth/scar removal. Hmmm...

(Bottom line: If you don't see a victory post from me in this thread anytime soon, feel free to laugh at me until your butts fall off.)

    EDIT: Yup, done.

    Code:
Zoe O'Phile, the gray elven druid, saved the world with his brave efforts
and became a great ruler while saving himself 10 times.
He scored 23186624 points and advanced to level 50.

ADOM Guides - whatever you wanted to know about playing a certain class, but have been afraid to ask!

Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.

Just got around to playing mine: Humey, the Tree born, Human Weaponsmith.

Went straight to the SMC for the blanket and shield. I killed a gremlin in the first room and thought nothing of it. On the way back I found the same room filled with about fifteen gremlins and a water trap in the corner. I simply couldn't kill them quickly enough.

The way... back? If you enter the SMC, you go forward, not back. Especially if you went for the blanket (which is the only reason to stay on the level).

Yes, back. That is to say, I had the blanket, and I was heading back to the upstairs to return to the wilderness.

If those gremlins really were in the first or one of the first rooms, you should have ran for the (hopefully still accessible) downstairs the second you saw them multiply, and try your luck in the UD. It's not easy, but definitely doable.

Which is about what I was trying to say, except for the fact that you should have never tried to go back up. If you go to the furthest room (where the blanket is), then you'll kill several monsters on the way, and in their places, you'll get some leveled-up nasties that will be impossible to break through on the way back. Even if you haven't been anywhere, the risk is great with such a weak combo as a human weaponsmith. If you want to go down instead, then either the staircase will be close to you, in which case descending should be easy - or far from you, in which case it is probably close to the upstairs, and in which case you shouldn't have gone for the blanket in the first place. That blanket is not worth risking your life for, you can get more later, it doesn't help immediate survival, and if you find a river, the damage is a bigger concern - if you want to preserve your water-vulnerable items, you can throw them across the river, or if you can't, throw them as far in as possible, then pick them up. You'll take 1 extra turn of damage (a non-issue with swimming skill) while having protected your items from 1-2 turns of rusting and drenching.

In conclusion, this is a general tip for any future characters anyone may make. If you enter the SMC (discounting the first time to generate it), then going down is preferable to finding the blanket. Only get it if it's in the staircase room or close enough to it so that you can afford the little detour. You can always screw around later with invisibility and teleportation. Don't go through the SMC until you're ready to handle the UD. Even if you are low-level and the SMC doesn't threaten you even after the leveled monsters generate, since you're bound to level up along the way - and getting attacked by a level 6 orc chieftain or something like that when you're level 3 spells doom for a human weaponsmith.

Ah, I see what you mean. I completely forgot about the UD to be honest.

As for getting the blanket, it's just something I've always done. I've lost relatively few characters on the trip for it, compared to the cavernous level in the puppy cave or the black druid, for example.
