Auto pickup doesn't work?

I have Auto_Pickup =/?\'~!$ in my cfg file. I can't turn it on in game, as it says that I haven't defined it yet. What is the problemo?

Make sure you don't have the character # in front of Auto_Pickup.

Exit and restart ADOM.

You may need to press Ctrl-a to enable/disable autopickup ingame.

one embarrassing mistake I've made is to edit the wrong
cfg file, the one for dos instead of winbeta.

another possibility is syntax, instead of

Auto_Pickup =/?\'~!$

try

Auto_Pickup = =/?\'~!$

Auto_Pickup =/?\'~!$ works but it only picks up missiles, scrolls, wands, amulets, bracers, potions and gold.

Eh, tried what gut said and it didn't work.
Oh well, no auto-pickup for me. It's just boring to play an archer...

Press Ctrl+a in game and note the location of the .cfg file. Make sure the file you are editting is in that location.

if all else fails, you can always use the in-game command

:= auto_pickup = *****

make sure you are saving after editing (sorry if i'm reaching here)
make sure it's not read-only for some reason
