Thread: Thief Steal from Shopkeepers

    Default Thief Steal from Shopkeepers

I've recently been able to keep a DE thief alive 'til lvl 20 (yay!). He's got the ability to steal from shops now.

Anyone know how it works? Does the shopkeep get pissed if it doesn't work, similar to haggling? Is it a stealth role? I'd try it, but I've never had a DE thief this high a level and I'm terrified of making an error :/

I remember trying it once and dying, but that was at least 2 versions before 1.0.0

Never got far with a thief, but you might get some useful info here:

You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

Basically, any time you pick up an item in a shop, it asks, "Do you want to steal this item?" Note that the shopkeeper may notice the theft, with the usual consequences: hostile shoppie, thugs, etc... I sometimes play Hurthling Thieves and almost never use it. There's rarely anything in shops worth the risk.

Not sure what determines whether you get caught. Wild guesses would include Pickpocketing and Stealth skills, and maybe the size of the item.
You hear the cries of the crowd: "Freebird!! Freebird!! Freebird!!"

You play some tunes on your lute.

There are easier and safer ways of robbing shops. By the time you're level 18, you should have access to most of them, I would think, or, more likely, you have good enough equipment that there's nothing worth robbing except the Casino. I don't know how reliable this method is--I usually consider it a nuisance because it means you have to go through 500 extra prompts if you want to check out all of the items in the Casino.

Yeah, I read that thread when it first came out. I disagree on the 'stun on crit' issue. When you've got Find Weakness at 100 you crit quite often, and then the big ol' meanies don't get a chance to hit you. I don't think it will help me much with a Greater Titan or Greater Moloch when I'll just 1v1 them, but it's really useful on a room full of Ogre Lords that take 2-3 hits to kill. They don't get a chance to hit back very often.

I discovered by accident that hitting "Enter" to the "Do you want to steal?" question defaults to No. *whew*

DE Thief is now lvl 32, going after the Summoner! hehehe

I love the stunning critical ability. If you've got a slaying weapon, you basically auto-disable any monster that you hit with it. The only places where it sucks are monsters where it is useful to exploit predictable movement (greater molochs) and against Andor Drakon (who will stagger/teleport away in unpredictable ways every time he gets stunned, making him very hard to kill in melee).
