Default 3 Questions About Ultras and Alignment

I want to try for my first Ultra ending--Lawful.

First: Am I correct that I can get crowned Lawful as soon as I 1) see the Stone Circle on the map and 2) get the Medal from the HMV?

Second: If I want to Precrown a couple of times, am I correct that I should do it on a white altar before I go Chaotic, so as to avoid angering the Lawful god by doing it on a black altar and then later converting? (Or does piety decay make the white altars safe rapidly enough, if I only find a black altar in the early game?)

Third: Is it easy to convert the altar in Dwarftown as necessary, or would I tend to get sacrificed if I tried? (Assuming, of course, that I am not silly enough to make Dwarftown hostile.)
Wins: Gnome Assassin, Drakeling Mindcrafter, Hurthling Weaponsmith, Dark Elf Wizard, Dwarf Archer

I believe you can do it before this. Once you complete Gaab'Baay's first non-ratling quest (boar skull, IIRC), then you can get crowned if you want.

I wouldn't worry about this too much. Do it on whatever altar is convenient. There's no reason to do Gaab'Baay's quests all that early in the game, so you can wait till you have huge pile of Casino gold to get your favoured crowning. Changing alignments isn't much of an issue before level 40 or so, TBH.

It converts as easily as other altars, AFAIK, but converting it will make all of DT hostile, so this is probably a bad idea as it will screw up the demented ratling quest (unless you've already done it, but by this point he'll be pretty dangerous). Even if you convert the altar, I'm not sure that most of the inhabitants can be sacrificed...

No all DT, just priest. Killing priest would make DT hostile, although locking her away on level above/bellow will not cause any side effects.

IIRC, none of regular inhabitants of DT can not be sacced on that altar. Wild dwarfs from levels above/bellow can but they [wild dwarfs] dying in DT causes DT being hostile.
    More or less like that.
So far rolled 15 casters with RoDS and shamelessly killed them within 200 turns. For eternium glory!
    (after 15 I stopped counting...)

You have to do it early in the game, so do it with whatever alignment is most convenient then. There's no particular reason why you would want to get your precrowns from the deity you get crowned by.

If you convert back to lawful via an altar later, it resets your piety with the lawful deity anyway. If you do it some other way, just drop a bunch of gold on a white altar.

Third: Is it easy to convert the altar in Dwarftown as necessary, or would I tend to get sacrificed if I tried? (Assuming, of course, that I am not silly enough to make Dwarftown hostile.)
    Why would you want to?

It just seemed like it might be handy to have a white altar there later, if it comes out black when I first arrive.

At any rate, thank you for the answers, everyone.

The DT altar is always either lawful or neutral. If your alignment is C or N flavoured, DT altar will be neutral. If it's L flavoured, then DT altar will be lawful.

My ULE monk, that I just won with, got his 2 precrowns while neutral. He found a neutral altar in UD and was neutral. It was just convenient
    .
If you want the ULE ending, I think it would be best to have the DT altar as L and not N if you can. That way you can more easily convert yourself to L by saccing 1 gold at a time. Nothing in DT should be hostile so you don't have to worry about a random hostile mob saccing you while you use the altar to convert yourself. Spawning a N or L altar in DT and converting it to C seems like a "bad idea." Also when converting yourself with an altar, wield a SI in your missile slot and drop all your gear someplace safe. Don't have to worry about item cursing, dooming, or item dusting that way.

Can you even convert a N altar at all?

Yes, as long as your character is L or C.

A neutral character can actually convert a neutral altar to chaotic by sacraficing neutral creatures. I've done it with ants on PC2, for example.
