Thread: Planning an Ultra on Elven Wizard

    Advice about disablers on more dangerous monsters is a good one, somehow I never really cared to throw all those potions of confusion and/or blindness or use wands of para.
    As for the other advices, indeed I already know all that. What I'm wondering about is the alignment change to do crone's quests. From what I know it's best to do that early since on higher levels its much more difficult to go back from C to L, so I will attempt that at lvl 20. Right now I'm 18, banshee is in the forest, alchemy maxed. Wands of door creation and webbing in inventory so soon I will set up a Laguna cage. Banshee hit me once - crit for 40 HP, when I have 98, but otherwise no problems with her. Dual wielding shields since ID. I'm a pack rat so it will be very difficult to not rely heavily on SoA.

    Edit: 1st major mistake: accidentally took the stairs up to dwarftown with banshee behind me and the town is hostile now. Ratling however is not, so I'm still in the game. But that was stupid :/
    Wanted to take her down to DH, but must have pressed the wrong staircase arrow <> and sage took me upstairs haha...
    Muscular dwarves showed up and the shopkeeper is hostile but the rest of them doesn't seem to care - guardians, regular dwarves are all neutral.

    Oh and to make PoGA I would need pots of youth and longevity...

    Edit2: 38 rings of djinni summoning, wish spell from potion of wonder = Ultra Archmage possible. Char lvl 23, all stats 50+\
    I'm cutting through all resistance like phase dagger through a giant rat. Fire temple done, minotaur emp gone, going for the RotHK now.
    I guess there's no point in updating this thread anymore, either I succeed and post a log, or die some horrific stupid death... and post a log anyway.

    Sorry for asking, but was there ever an Ultra without such techniques as clearing forest with banshee, ring dipping, etc?

    Yes. Mine, for starters.

    Dear lord, don't assume that any of that is obligatory. Though there often are risks associated with it, too, aside from it being quite boring. Smart use of ten items will always beat not-so-smart use of a thousand. Many players will prepare excessively through item hoarding, and as long as they don't get killed doing it (Strength of Atlas, anyone? Fireball trap plus banshee?), that's fine, but it's still excessive.

    The greatest hurdle is the amulet of life saving. Extreme measures in finding it may be unavoidable, but I'd only start worrying about them if the Darkforge pools prove uncooperative. All other random items required can be gotten quite reliably from the Casino. Usually you're barely in your mid-twenties after you beat the ToEF, and the Casino is basically right after the ToEF. I wouldn't start taking extreme measures to get Gaab'Baay's items before the Tower, is what I'm saying.

    I think there is a good chance the casino has either no scroll of danger or no wand of monster creation, actually. My ultra didn't find the wand there and had a rough time finding one elsewhere. I guess if you restock you're bound to get them, though.

    Sure. An ultra is not much more difficult than a regular game, except you need to get a bit lucky early on to find an AoLS.

    I just did an ultra in the thread below this without any super scummy techniques besides starvation/sickness scumming when eating corpses, using the ID for blink dog corpses, and pickpocketing. The RNG did throw me an AoLS and 11 wishes, though. I'd say it's not too difficult to to do as long as you have an AoLS or a wish for one.

    Usually find multiple wands of monster creation/scrolls of danger before the casino. Always boggles my mind when someone is past the casino and hasn't found either. I play with Treasure Hunter installed, so maybe that's the difference.

    Wands of monster creation are pretty common. Scrolls of danger are fairly rare--probably as rare as, say 7lbs. There's a decent chance you'll see one or two in a game, but it's by no means guaranteed. I checked the savegames from 10 of my winners, and, of those, 7 had seen a scroll of danger and 3 had not, for what it's worth. I didn't check for treasure hunter, but most of them probably had it.

    All those rare items drop eventually after spending some time with banshee in the forest, this fixes so many item problems.
    I get lots of useful scrolls, usually including 1-2 scrolls of danger and plenty of wands of MC.
    Mostly also 2-3 pairs of 7LB, 3-4 SoCR, 1-2 AoLS and anywhere around 100 potions of water and 90 percent of spell books.
    All that at the time cost equivalent to 10 blessed stomafillia herbs digested from bloated to starving.
    Not much I suppose and risk-free, assuming everything is properly prepared, as in banshee is in laguna cage and you are locked in a corner and carefully W5.
    The only problem is Khelly that has to be saved or allowed to die in order to get deeper into CoC, everything else is superficial.
    Personally I never use the starvation/sickness method to raise stats, I prefer getting PoGA directly from the forest and raising stats to 40-50, which is for all intents and purposes enough for any ending.

    I died haha.
    Here's the short .flg with some unimportant stuff cut.
    Killed by (probably) extremely experienced greater moloch in a tension room on MT level after killing Nurgy (no need for disablers, couple of acid balls did the trick).
    Everything else, emp moloch, chaos dragon, emp minotaur, srax - breezed though with slaying ammo and acid ball.
    Elemental temples posed no challenge at all. 38 RoDS in this game, some still left over. Filk in ID10, no big deal.
    Died from overconfidence, do not ever think you are powerful enough to survive anything, since the best chars can easily be killed by a careless player.
