    Default YASD: Doomed, Naked, Wizard

I've been trying a slightly bizarre challenge recently where I'm playing a doomed wizard who doesn't carry any items except food, spellbooks, and chaos orbs. This is my best attempt so far, ending with a bad ToEF death.

I attribute my death to three main problems. There was a mixed tension room of fire giants/beetles on the level that I opened but didn't clear. They started wandering up behind me while I was fighting in the Temple, which lead to lots of problems because I couldn't safely retreat all that well. I also underestimated my healing needs. I went in with CLW, the Water Orb and 70 blessed spenseweeds. Most of the spense had burned by the time I hit the top level. I had to use the orb two or three times while trying to take out the Wyrm. Unfortunately, I didn't have any disablers (I had stun ray, but never tried it high enough to be useful), so I pretty much had to tank the wyrm at close range, which is a little tricky with 10 PV. Eventually he panicked and ran back into the Temple. This is where it got really bad. I didn't have invis, so I had to fight every @#$%ing monster in the place to try to find him. Managed to clear most of them, but eventually a particularly stubborn grue got in close and knocked me out.

On the plus side, I'm relatively confident that this challenge is doable, which I think is awesome. I just need to prepare myself a little better.

Eye color: blue Hair color: white Complexion: black
    Height: 5'3" Weight: 22 pounds

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents are travelling adventurers. They are doing moderately
well but are talented enough to survive.
During your childhood one of your uncles taught you a lot of things
about the history of your people. Your vast knowledge on the legends and
the lore of your people made you very popular with your friends because of
all the exciting stories you knew.
In your youth you worked a lot to become rich and famous later.
Consequently you rarely had enough time to play with other kids of your
     age.
Your young adulthood was characterized by hard and long work. You
had decided to study under a renowned master. To your great disappointment
you had to find out, that he was a hard, unjust and tyrannic man,
embittered by his old age. Your apprentice years were quite terrible.
You decided to become a Wizard.

Stun ray is easy to train up in the wilderness :/ Cool challenge though. Might try it myself some time. What made you choose dark elf instead of gnome or drakeling?

Well, I really wanted Alertness for bolt dodging since I was probably going to be lacking in intrinsics unless I got pretty lucky. I suppose I could have just as easily gone drake, although they have lower starting Le than dark elves, and that's the hardest stat to train for a PC with no gold, no gems, no potions, and difficulty killing the oracle. I've also done a lot of doomed drakes before, and just wanted something different.

How much stun ray do you need to hit something while doomed? I had it at +8, and I'd run out of PP before I could get it to land on a goblin. I don't think I ever saw it work.

Weird... I've gotten it to work very reliably on the ACW with +9 effectivity.

And why's it hard to kill the Oracle? You can outrange her death ray easily.

I haven't looked much into how dooming affects spell power. I guess it must be pretty severe for some spells.

What's the range on death rays? I had it in my head at the time that is was around 6.

Dooming nudges die rolls by rolling several results and choosing the worse one, as far as I remember. It might be that the die roll that determines Stun Ray success is especially noticably affected by it, which results in needing a much higher spell power to achieve success.

I don't really understand why.. You had alertness and some frost bolt left? Was it still too dangerous to blast him from a distance, or was it because you couldn't retreat far enough?

Hmm, yes, it sounds likely if it's not working on goblins.
