    Default First Win!

Hi there, I've been reading this forum for about a month now, and just finished the game for the first time, so I decided to come out of the closet and post my first YAVP.

It was an ULE with a barbarian, pretty easy game, I think, though I haven't even seen D50 before. I was pretty spoiled, read a lot from guidebook, but the most scummy things I used were treasure hunter and training dex wearing moloch. I read few threads here with people asking what to do with their hoards of wishes, but I had only two - one from pool to save Khelavaster, one ring from blue dragon cave, spent it on boar skull, wanted to finish before day 100 corruption increase. Oh, how naive I was!

At the end I had 9 SoCRs, but could have a lot more - wasted 4 on eating Keriax for +St and +To, which I didn't get anyway, and was reading them on the chaos plane to stay pure as a tiny girl :-)

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your mother was a wise shaman and healer. You didn't know your
father and his origins seem to be very mysterious.
As a child you were very active and imitated the hunters and
warriors of your tribe at all opportunities.
During your youth you traveled to nearby tribes and traded with
them. You met many strangers and learned a lot about the outside world.
As a young adult you more and more separated from the more
traditional members of your tribe. Your desire to see the outside world
     became overwhelming.
At the age of 24 you left your tribe.

The story (wow, that's a long one!):

Started as a drakish barbarian, saved the carpenter, went for puppy, -hmm, a vault on the last level! What do we have here? Orcs, minor undead? Nope, a mixed one with lightning vortex and extremely experienced revenaunt charging at me >_< Managed to grab the cute dog corpse and get away. In the UD found a chaotic altar and decided to convert it and get a precrown, but you know, here in soviet russia altar converts you, so I ended up chaotically precrowned with Ironfists. Got the quest to feed ratling and off to the CoC.

Pre-DF CoC was nothing special, except for 3 altars of every color, dwarf asked to kill a tarantula. Oh yes, we have plenty of these :-| Dived through dark dwarven halls, moloch and greater moloch on first level and a giant rust monster on second, wand of trap creation saves the day!

After all the surface hustle I thought: "Why not try an ultra ending? I'll mess something up in later game anyway, but this way I'll play longer before my stupidity kills me!". So I fed ratling: phial, Nonnak, elegloves, moonsicle, AMW and Big Punch. Went to the darkforge and -YES!- sipped a wish for AoLS for Khelly.

Casino Shop generated an Executor for me, but I had to leave it there because it costed more than I could lift and I hadn't found a girdle of greed yet :-( By that time I had crown of fire and a black dragonmail that could get me a guaranted lighting immune on crowning. So I became a champion of order. Crowned with a skullcrusher, not bad, but I already had executor waiting for me in the casinom, so I rather hoped to get a Vanquisher to slay some blue dragons later.

One level before the kitty there was a greater vault of red dragons, where I finally found my 7LB. Was so glad I butchered them all recklessly. Now the kitty. Located him with a wand, draw the exuctor and rushed towards. Halfway bumped into someone in the corridor. "Damn it, invisible stalker, not now, I've got a kitty lord to fight! O boy, you hit pretty hard, but how'd you like my TRMENDOUS BLOWWMMM!" Cat lord's corpse? Oh, riiight, he's invisible... Ate the corpse, got a tiny little bit of dexterety and doomed. Ten squares later falling door crapped my 7LB and half of my holy water. Curse you, kitty lord! :-(

AKW quest went pretty ironic. I never tried it before, so I, mmm, "prepared" well. I was wearing only artifacts, eternium pieces of armor and two rings covered with artifact gloves. In inventory I had only a bunch of unindentified weapons I was carrying around in hopes to find a "of hunting" one to visit bugville later with. Among these weapons there was an halberd(50s). "Oh, that must be eternium. A shame I don't have a Wyrmlance" I thought. I was pretty sure, that unid'ed Wyrmlance is a "rune covered". Thus I ventured. After killing the wyrm (was a looot easier than I expected) I read scroll of identify to check the loot and dammit, I HAD WYRMLANCE ALL THE WAY LONG! Also there was a RoDS and my first scroll of education. Learned find weakness with a first try (emm, ok, now I have a stack of useless writing sets :-)) and wished for giant boar skull.

Had to kill AKW and Blup's mommy, felt really sorry for them, but needed exp desperatly to start Filks quest. First kill was bandit, something like 40 of them overall. Then was emp moloch, old crone's quests and bugville.

Only two more things to do: Keriax and quickling tree, and it's only day 64! So I set off to the stone circle. Now I really hate that place. Had spent about a week in the wilderness for the last '5' command to take 2 hours instead of one, simply skipping the "darkest hour"! What should I do for a month now? Well, looks like RNG wants me to do some stat scumming. I dug out completly 3 or 4 levels below D40, gathered tons of morgia and moss, killed Kherab for an anvil and went to UD to make me a worthy set of armour. Sick and wearing moloch armour I smithed my eternium boots and girdles and helms and bracers and whatever I found on the level, until I had something like DV-PV of 120\100 and 50 dex.
"Now I am prepared for you, Keriax!" I shouted standing at the stone circle once again. Few more days to wait though. "Hmm, My ali dropped a little to L, but I have this tract of order with me, time to read some holy scriptures of Ssracht".
You read blessed tract of order.
    There's some hustle up there.
"Take this, puny mortal!" All your equipment turns to dust.
WHAT?! Why, Ssracht? I was your fervent follower! WHY?
    http://cs5718.userapi.com/u2020337/4...x_cb9f7cbf.jpg
All my precious smithed to maximum stuff was crumpled. But at least this time I got into the stone circle.

There I was standing over dragon's still warm body, wondering that I still need one especially stubbron corruption to get into the quickling tree. Guidebook said, that Keriax gives 8 corruptions and +10 St and To when eaten. So I removed some extra corruptions and ate it. Well, it finaly gave me needed nimbleness, but no St and To increases. So I just spent 4 SoCRs on nothing. Could have eaten a corruption trap in Darkfroge for the same result.
Quickling tree was also a disaster. It turned out, that quickling corpse speed increase effect is capped at something like 200-205. And I was already at 190 myself after bugville and all the potions. Also I didn't know that times runs faster in the tree. But after the 'stone circle incident' it actually didn't matter.

D49 wasn't as bad for drakeling as described, dropped only to sp60, heated myself back to normal in like 5 charges of wand of fire.
On D50 blessed scroll of familiar summoning gave me a balor ^_^ He was very nice and slained almost everything himself. I named him Boris. I was pretty surprised to find out that all the monsters on D50 don't summon. When I first saw all these chaos wizards I thought that it gonna be a hard nut, but actually it was a piece of cake. When we cleared out the portal room, Boris summoned tons of neutral goblins for me as farewell gesture.
It was time to go, but I was seriously concerned about what happened with tract of order at the stone circle. What the hell was that for? What if it made me a fallen champion? I've never got past the mana temple before this game, it'd be very sad if the gate would chew me just for reading that goddamn book. I took deep breath and entered the ChAoS GaTe.

Hoooray! I was alive, Ssracht still loves me! Now it's time to kick some ChAoS GoD AsS. At first I throw a potion of confusion at Andy, and bastard started to teleport constantly. Not sure if these are connected, but when he calmed down, I simply engaged him in melee. The coward wasn't even fighting back! He kept draining my appearance and charisma whilst I was smashing his face. Dude, I'm a giant lizard, I'm not that pretty, you probably find me. He was too jealous, I think. That killed him ^_^

    Congratz and nice report lol
Treasure Hunter is an absolutely immoral talent and people who take it are slaves of their lust for loot. A real character doesn't rely on worldly goodies to save the world but will do so by trusting his inner strength.

Congrats on first win. Very stylish to do an ultra for your first as well.

A few quick thoughts and advice.

-I wouldn't ever trade the AMW to the ratling (or sac it or anything). Indestructible armor is just too hard to find, and the intrinsics aren't to overlooked. I mean, if you had missed with your tremendous blow against that "invisible stalker", you probably would have been dead. Wearing the AMW guarantees -SeeI, so you could have at least seen it was the right monster. I personally wouldn't give away the elemental gauntlets either, since it makes the Water Orb rather sensible to use, although, I understand doing so given that you have Ironfist. Crown of science would be an alternative for one. For the other, I probably would have just waited till post-Casino and sacced one of your other useless artifacts like black tome.

-Weapons of hunting are sadly useless. The effect is very small, IIRC. Bows of hunting are pretty good though. There's another problem that "hunting" only affects animal corpses, and I'm not positive that bugs qualify as animals. Food preservation is the most important thing for corpse generation...

-The behaviour with tracts is quite strange. Might be a bug, I'm not sure. Using a tract of order appears to take into account your relationships with all three gods, not just lawful. If either of the other two gods really hate you, particularly if they have a significantly greater negative piety than your lawful positive piety, then using the tract will be dangerous. If your lawful piety is high AND negative piety is high, then your god may protect you from the interference of the others. It actually works best if you are lawful but don't have a bad relationship with any of the gods (eg. when you are just starting out). Being crowned lawful hurts your relationships with the other gods, hence the problems... This seems to be the case with all three tracts. I have no @#$%ing idea why it works this way. I would suggest it is best to avoid all tracts like the plague.

-There's pretty severe diminishing returns on speed increases from corpses beyond about 170. Getting to 190 is pretty epic, actually. If you lower your speed a lot (boots of slow shuffle, for example), you can maybe get to about 220 or so. I don't think you can get much above that without potions or lots and lots of wishes.

-For stone circle, I normally just stand on the thing and hold >. With 7lbs, you can normally get in there on the first try. Sometimes you get bad luck and miss it though. If you know how long it takes when you move, you can go into a neighbouring wilderness square and wait there to try to more accurately calibrate the times, I guess.

-The only disabler worth using on Andor is paralysis. Using confusion, stun, blind, etc. produces the behaviour that you described, which, as you no doubt realised, is super annoying. This actually makes ultras for thieves in particular quite annoying to do (beastfighters too, but they have other problems) because thieves get an ability to stun on critical hits. Since the ToTRR is a slaying weapon, that means they stun Andor on every hit, which means he teleports randomly all the time. Thankfully, he isn't actually that dangerous as long as you have death/paralysis resist and decent damage output (if this is low, you're maybe in danger from corruption or death by St/To drains).
Hoping to win with every class, doomed. Archer, Barbarian, Bard, Beastfighter, Druid, Elementalist, Farmer, Fighter, Monk, and ULE Priest down.

Thanks, and thanks for the tips.

I understand how good AMW are, I usually put them on asap and wear till death do us apart, but not this time. I've had -death from pool and -SeeI on RCT and Crown of Leadership. And dozen of dragonmails and eternium platemails to wear. As for cat lord - he had his chance to fight back, I've missed with tremendous couple times. I was planning to get the ring actually, but stepped on a cat in darkforge, so he wasn't buffed up that much to rip in one turn.

I'm sure I tried zapping Andor Drakon with wand of paralysis, but it bounced off him, just like off the wall.

Maybe he was standing inside a wall - I think he walk through them like ghosts or earth elementals.

Congratulations on the win, an ultra for your first one is indeed pretty good!

Lol. Not bad for an ultra ending.

You could have picked up the CoS in the DH as a sacrifice fodder instead of AMW.
