    Default Weaponsmith/ore

I'm just curious because it's been bugging me for some time now.

Is the ore only useful to the weaponsmith because that profession is the only one I know that can melt down stuff into ingots.

Or can ore also be used to upgrade items without turning them into ingots, or does it become pretty much useless to other classes except to sell?

Any character with the Smithing skill can smelt ore into ingots by applying the skill at a forge and selecting the ore. It requires anvil and hammer.

Ore is actually less useful to weaponsmiths than other classes, since weaponsmiths can melt down items. I do think it's strange that weaponsmiths don't automatically get the Mining skill, since mining for ore is a lot easier than trying to find enough higher-metal items to smith items that aren't made of iron.

That is a valid point. What vexes me is that superior metals weigh less, so you need more items of higher scarcity to improve higher metal gear. On the other hand, I have found a productive use for items with the ultra-heavy prefix
