I think druids and especially priests should also be tested, if no one can provide the answer already.

Priests and druids both get scrolls and books, not just spellbooks. I thought it was just wizards that got that - do Necros get every spellbook in the game too?

They started to in gamma 10, when Thomas really upgraded them. I haven't verified in 1.1.1. I'll do so as soon as possible unless someone knows. I really like them but they're tough to get going.

A recent necro I managed to lose to stupidity went to the Rift. My recollection is that it was about 50/50 scrolls/books.
The door suddenly falls in your direction! You are not nimble enough to evade the door. Your anvil is crunched!

I'm going to write it up as Wizards only for the time being. I'm struggling with a dark elven necro who managed to get to neutrality, got Healing and Detect Traps when I noticed his Charisma is 2. That does not bode well.

Why does a necro need charisma? To charm his lovely slaves?

Years ago I noticed when one of my necromancers got the Crown of Leadership the game messages about controlling slaves changed. I've been hesitant ever since to attempt controlling high-level slaves with an abysmal Charisma score. Some of those slaves could kill the PC in a heartbeat.

As far as I know necromancy slaves never rebel, or if they do it's only when fireball traps are set off by the player. However it could be that charisma affects their obedience to the character's orders (like with regular pets). I've not played with them much I must admit.

However, more important is the fact that necromancers don't need to use necromancy. You can easily play them like a normal wizard. Getting to the Library shouldn't be too hard - level up against greater claw books, ID-hop for spellbooks, grab the climbing set from the pyramid, and gain a few levels in the normal course of the game. I'd do it myself if I were on a decent computer for it (or had any free time )

    > level up against greater claw books,

You really are on an indecent computer : )
"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."

I'll play him just for research. I was just exhausted last night. The early game was quite a struggle. My approach to necros is not to use necromancy until I find quickling corpses. Other slaves aren't worth it. Too much babysitting.
