    The Ancardian Fighting Championship II

    So this is the second installment of the arena challenge. Last time we had players choosing their races and classes
    and proving the worth of their PC's race/class combo. So I thought for this time, the player should be the one
    proving their skills. Maybe random classes should be enough to do that, as class is the much greater factor
    in deciding a PC's power than race (except troll of course). Here is a first draft of the rules. If we can get a final
    draft ready by Saturday, I suggest we try to play as many of our characters then as possible, as more people
    should be free to play (and spectate others playing on the server) on the weekend. Later and or earlier playing is
    debatable.

    The Goal
    Become the undisputed champion of the arena.

    The FINAL Rules

    You do not have to play on Saturday or on the server, but I hope you do.

    -Mercy rule: If your PC dies prior to reaching the Arena, you may reroll once.

    - The first (anemic) race should be your choice of gnome, hurthling, human or elf (any elf).
    - The other (beefy) race should be either drake, orc, dwarf or troll.
    *You may NOT choose the class of your PC. It must be chosen randomly. Here are some ways of doing this. Roll PCs until you get one
    of the proper class, edit the 'class mask' in your configuration files, use the '.roll class' command on 'guttbot' in irc.freedode #adom,
    draw names out of a hat... it really doesn't matter, so long as the choice is random and abides by the following catagorizations.
    - The class for the anemic race may only be one of the following: Archer, barbarian, fighter, ranger, paladin, priest, wizard, beastfighter, elementalist, druid, monk, necromancer
    - The class for the beefy race may only be one of the following: thief, bard, healer, assassin, weaponsmith, farmer, mindcrafter, merchant


    - You should use version 1.1.1 for your 2 mandatory PCs (for the sake of uniformity), though
    if you have access to an updated version, you can roll a third race/class character as well.
    - You may not use the auto-roller, though server play is fine.
    - You may heal in between arena battles, but you must not leave the arena level.
    - You may only visit Terinyo (only for food) and the CoC. You may enter the wilderness only if forced by an encounter
    while travelling directly to the CoC. If you DO get a random encounter you can't escape, you are allowed to kill the
    monsters for xp.
    - You may kill no NPC's. If you kill only lowly ratling traders, you may get off with only a stern nerd-frown.
    Secret Quest #1 worth 187 secret quest points: kill all ratling traders.
    - You must document your Gladius opponent, count your title defenses, and cause of death if applicable.
    (even if one is playing on the server, it would be nice if they posted a few lines here, for all to read)
    *- It is OK to use the naming bug/feature, as that is the only way to semi-level the boss fights.
    (The suckers who draw Lin Hon Kay are still getting screwed.)

    - You may not win fights via teleportation, though teleporting within the arena is OK.
    - You may not chose birthsign.
    - You may not use the question system to pump stats. Sorry, but I think the answers are code-dived.
    - If you are a bard or necro, you MAY USE PETS/SLAVES.

    - You may use herbs, shops, or any PC building tactic you like, just don't pass these restrictions:
    - You must initiate your first arena battle within... 2000 turns.
    - You must initiate your first arena battle before reaching exp. level 10
    - You must initiate your first arena battle before day 10.

    - You must post a few brief lines, describing the PCs you have rolled. Example:
    Beefy PC: Unicorn born drake priest. Starting book, darkness.
    Anemic PC: Wolf born high elf farmer.

    * The naming bug/feature is when you use the 'n'ame command on spaces where
    you suspect an invisible monster (Lin-Hon-Kay) of being. The game will thus
    give away the position of the monster.

    And won't the random class favor some players immensely?

    I suppose just completing it gives you the honors, no matter the luck. We'll just look down at the grey elf wizard who makes it.

    One suggestion for an added rule:
    -Mercy rule: If your PC dies prior to reaching the Arena (or is confronted by an impassible river or whatever), you may reroll once, but you must choose the same race/class as the PC who died. If your PC dies at a level passed the Arena (eg. you wanted to race to the Big Room or Dwarftown), you don't get a reroll.
    Hoping to win with every class, doomed. Archer, Barbarian, Bard, Beastfighter, Druid, Elementalist, Farmer, Fighter, Monk, and ULE Priest down.

    Ok, just did this on the server. First character: human archer, book-born. Died in the 20th fight against Li-Hon-Kay. I was playing p14, naming didn't work. I didn't manage to find out where he was, used up both prayers.

    Second character: troll ranger, raven-born. Used true berserking and choose the extra hitpoints talents.
    Got the gladius for killing Bonk, the hill giant. After that, the notable fights I had were 2 skeletal warriors, 1 ogre magus and a troll berserker. Don't remember the rest, it's in the kill list. Now I have earned 31K gold and Dak has no more fights for me.

    How about announcements/timetable for spectating on the server?

    Also, I don't think people should be allowed to go beyond the Arena level.
    I like my women like my ADOM loot - hunted as treasure and in extra quantity.

    Grobblewobble is an idiot. He broke the following rules:

    1. Played too early, while the rules are still being debated (obviously).
    2. You may only visit Terinyo and the CoC. He visited the wilderness because he failed to avoid the encounter, so DQ.
    3. He killed a few ratling traders. Killing NPC's is forbidden! So definite DQ.
    4. He played the wrong version.

    Was fun anyway.

    With 'failed to show' being the result of having no 'mercy' rule as jellyslayer mentions, iirc.
    We could do it the same way this time, or tweak it, either way.

    Yes, which I was thinking would be just fine, and if anything, offer a greater
    chance to impress if you roll a weakling. We could reduce the class options for
    each character. Maybe the weakling race has to be paired with a powerful class
    and vice versa?

    I was hoping as many people as could would just play on saturday in a somewhat
    opportunistic way. If we organize times, we have to come up with rules of how
    to handle those who don't show on time (or at all). We can announce intended
    play times individually in this thread though.

    This popped up last time, and was handled thusly:

    I could take this part out though: "Weaklings will be granted an extra 1000 turns, possibly a bit
    more if circumstance dictates." since we shouldn't have any true weaklings this time, at least
    if we decide to mix powerful races with weak classes and such.

    Things won't start hopping (for non-grobblewobbles, that is) until Saturday. You could easily
    get familiar with the server and irc in about an hour. Note: do not just play on the server
    and neglect irc. You will not be able to be properly pestered if you don't log in with us. I
    have downloaded megairc and putty, configured them, zipped them into a couple of convenient
    files and hosted them on wikispaces. Give them a try if you find new things as daunting as I.

    I like this idea but if it still has to be random people will need to set a class mask.. may be a bit too complicated. And I think it could mess up the secret quest. So maybe best to keep it complete random?

    If you want to allow some building before starting on the arena, this rule may be a bit restrictive. A gnome who clears a minor vault could be level 11 within the 2000 turns limit, should that be forbidden? If so, a troll would have one more advantage over the gnome because they don't have to worry about this limit. I would be in favor of a simple rule that says you just have to get to the arena as fast as you can, without any sort of building.
