    Default Light in the Darkness

So I've had this issue before and managed to survive without it but... what's the best place for one go about finding a torch or an amulet of light. Mana temple is calling but there is no light. I've got some grinding time as I just accidentally drank instead of dropped a potion of exchange on an alter... 30 to -> 15 to. Grr.

Are you telling me you don't have about 30 torches when reaching the mana temple, torches has been made so common, finding flint and steel and tinder is the real problem now.

Just kidding, only recently I also had to obtain the mana orb without either of those items. I had plenty wands/crystals of light and booze though, which was enough to get the guardian into the corridor, blind and slay him.

There isn't any particularly good place to find them. Torches and firemaking supplies are somewhat common in 1.2.0, so you can just grind out low DL, non-corrupting areas (big room maybe) until you find one or the other. Check the Casino stock if you haven't already.

Phial of Caladriel will work in a pinch, I guess, as will light spell or a well-charged wand of light. Or you can just kill the Archmage in darkness, I suppose. It's not fun, but I've done it before.

found a torch... in the water dragon lair... is it worth it?

    Yup.

Also found an ordinary ring. Also found out she teleports to you when you every time steal things. learn new things all the time

    Ring is a =oDS.

    Nice.

Didn't take any hit to my =N which was surprising.

Not sure if stealing from her is a chaotic act per se. Killing her is another matter of course.

I'm pretty sure it won't hurt if we put a torch along with flint and tinder at the same place where a bunch of tools lies in the Pyramid. Pretty generic adventurer's gear.
I like my women like my ADOM loot - hunted as treasure and in extra quantity.

This is surprising. In 1.2.0, I found that by the time you reach the Mana Temple, you'll have so many torches you could use them as missiles, at least with TH.

    That sounds fine.

Yes, if you look at my first sentence, you will note me making reverence to that fact. I had 2 amulets of light that was destroyed not long before the mana temple, so I wasn't collecting primitive means of making light. Since then, I now do keep a torch, tinder and the box in inventory as a backup. Although my current character has 4 amulets.

I always like having torches around even if I have an amulet of light. There are situations where you may need to keep a particular amulet on, and can always throw the torch in the tool/shield slot instead.

I like the torches over amulets of light, because in addition to what JellySlayer mentioned they improve your LOS radius (unlike amulets of light). Plus, there's nothing better to put in the tool slot once you're done with the Orbs. However, my most recent playthrough? I haven't found a box of flint and steel whole game. Preserver had to make way for an amulet of light when Nuurag was coming. One of the previous two playthroughs I only found a tinderbox in the casino and it was the only one whole game.

It would be great indeed if firemaking equipment could be found in the Pyramid or elsewhere (gremlin cave?).

It would fit in with the equipment you get from the 4th dwarftown quest.
