    Default YASCK - Virbartas, trollish chaos knight

    I wanted to quickly and easily mark off the stupid chaos follower off my "Things To Do in ADOM" so I rolled up a trollish chaos knight, because it seemed the most fitting. Trolling Andor Drakon, so to speak. For a good reason.

    The beginning was the hardest part - rolling up a non-terribly corrupted troll took some tries. Then, a few died ignominiously while I was figuring out how to play a neutral CK to do quests (because rolling a non-terribly corrupted troll that was also literate seemed like a tall order, even though in the end this guy was literate) - e.g. had one that offset fiery pain in his stomach with a blessed necklace of rapid healing (this one repeated it before getting immune to pain) until an exploding rune took it away. Another one was 1000 xp away from getting Immune to Pain, so I converted for an easier Thrundarr's quest and got in over my head with a mixed tension room just above dwarftown, where ratling warlord and master swordsman proved an unsurpassable barrier for a wandless chaos knight at the verge of levelling up to stop the pain.

    Anyway, this guy did pretty standard stuff - went through UD, bought 'oRapidHealing from Barnabas, got to Dwarftown, converted, did quests. Had to get a bit creative to get 13 lvl to visit Rehetep before winning the arena (mainly because blink dogs infested the big room and I've already did go C- -> NC -> CN -> NC -> CN -> N- due to the lawful buggers and a desire to complete quests, while teleportation and invisibility were limited). When the Dwarftown's greater daemon was dead and mystic visitied (SoCRs received!) I gleefully slaughtered remaining blink dogs, dug out all the wilderness graves, killed Barnabas and Munxip (and some collateral) and went to receive Andor Drakon's crowning gift. It turned out costly, as somehow I lost 20k out of 50k gold to pixies in the big room. Sacced a bunch of guaranteed artifacts to get the crowning, because I didn't want to wait and I expected the reward to make up for it. After all, on paper, 4 out of 6 Chaos Knight's gifts are some of the best artifacts in the game and Grod is pretty cool too (especially with +Crit bug fixed; also, I don't remember ever having a chance to play with it). But no, Death's Blade. And Cold Immunity to boot. Here's my reason to troll Andy.

    The ancient claymore (like there any other in the game) was good enough to clean Darkforge, where I received the shield of raw steel because the druid was among the collateral damage in Terinyo. Took it to ToEF just in case, but it wasn't needed (RDSM found in DF sufficed). Cold-blooded speed was enough to beat up everyone with 2 heavyhitting slashes of Death's Blade and a step back, including the Wyrm (though out of carefulness I weakened it with wands over crowds a bit). I much more preferred when ACW couldn't be easily beat in a fair fight.

    The eternal guardian level had an altar, sacrificed three or four EGs for 50k xp a pop, though it wasn't all that straightforward and as a rather slowly moving troll I feared that I'll run out of teleportation charges and speed advantage to actually bypass EG if I generate any more.

    Casino contained a lot of goodies (Preserver, True Aim, Lust for Glory). Of course, while browsing the casino's wares (stocking them in one point for a mass identify on unbought goods) corruption kicked in and guess which one? With 57k gold and 87k debt for drained wand charges I had incentive to see how much harder robbing the casino is. Fortunately, not all that much, the shopkeeper was lured into the far end of the casino easily with a wand of far slaying and 1 teleport (and a few fireballs from ancient dwarf's wand) later, Virbartas left the casino amongst the charred corpses of casino guards.

    Cat Lord was a tough opponents, but there was a few fireballs left in the wand. Then, Virbartas finished the panicked and kept occupied by a wand of webbing kittyman with Cat's Claw (for both irony and actual usefulness - it's the archer's booster) in hand and repeated shots of True Aim.

    Both Air and Earth temple didn't seem any harder than previously. Yulgash still has a propensity to come out from amongst the crowd of his summons and guardians like an idiot (especially if summons can't see the invisible player character) and the denizens of earth temple followed me to another level without any fuss (even though I didn't try that much, as I could take them en masse anyway).

    On D:45 a Greater Vault of Fire creatures had a very welcome sight when swept with item detection - golden bracers - so I've read 3 blessed scrolls of peace and went to work. Trained crossbows while at it. Again coldbloodedness made it safe and easy to clean out the ancient dragons. After getting the bracers of war I cleaned out the rest of the vault and also found a certain jet-black axe. RNG sure made up for that crowning gift.

    Nuurag-Vaarn got executed easily in straight melee (zasvid 46, Chaos Archmage 0), even though I forgot about setting myself up for him - fortunately I went with Lust for Glory as my shield for style (and off chance of getting surprised by a gorgon) over superior DV with a large eternium one, so the only thing I had to put on was a ring of see invisible (Nuurag was 2 steps away - if I relied on AMW for this fight as usual, that wouldn't have ended well).

    On D:50, frozen to Speed 10 or so, I've spent some time scribing scrolls of peace (earlier attempts at SoCRs didn't bode well after 3 failures with Literacy around 60) first and pacified background corruption a bit while thawing a little. Then went to work on the denizens of D:50, convinced that I have to slay them all. However, the 10th (or so) opponent dropped a wand of destruction, so I dug, destroyed a lever, killed a bunch of balors (with speed around 80 and without singling them out - a Chaos Knight with Preserver, the bracers and Executor and a bunch of beneficial corruptions is a veritable juggernaut) and pulled the other lever (a bit afraid of a stray ghost lord). The end (though it doesn't jive with the experience other characters would have - I mean, when someone other than a non-chaotic chaos knight pulls both levers, balors and chaos guys don't just die, they pull the lever back).

    It was a bit of waste to have a such a powerful character meet such an ignominious end, but by the time the RNG coughed up the good stuff changing direction would have been more arduous than fun. So, I cross off the stupid chaos knight ending from my list and claim moral victory. After all, my troll was named after Starscream (video).

    Well, it's not a victory per se, so It's probably not so bad if the game ends right then. It is still inconsistent as you've mentioned. I think the balors should at least try to stop this idiot. Maybe the game should only end once you ascend the stairs with the gate closed, to make it consistent?

    Although, this type of ending is probably just a way to tell the player that it is not supposed to be done if he/she is stupid enough. Also, telling the player that it seems he has succeeded when pulling the second lever doesn't make much sense either.

    Does this happen when a Chaos Knight pulls both levers? It's one of those messages that should be changed for the class, then. Just like getting engulfed by a "strange" radiation when you step in a corruption trap. Or level-up messages saying "You now gain a bonus of X" even if you're not chaotic and thus don't gain anything at the time.

    Also, congratulations on the win, zasvid (if the game ends with a "his further fate" story, it's a win as far as I'm concerned ). That's a great selection of artifacts.

    I wouldn't know, but according to the victor, if I understand correctly, every being of chaos just dies. I was just saying that it shouldn't be changed to what you quoted in order to make the balors still open the gate, because it would not make sense. I was stating the obvious, maybe. One would though expect that the Balors at least still try to open or keep the gate open. Like with non-chaos knights.

    Yes, it is a victory, but not for chaos or the player character. Congratulations on being the most stupid chaos follower ever!

    I keep saying to myself that I have to attempt this ending someday. I think it's the funniest and ADOM-est way of winning (at least while we wait for the implementation of the nihilist ending): you save Ancardia and wipe out the ChAoS armies, and your stupid death is immortalized; no other way of dying gives you eternal fame, and the other ways of winning have no humor. So congratulations, and let's all chant and laugh at Virbartas' bumbling deed!
