    Default Montoya the Highelf Duelist: Closed the Gate in p18

    I wanted to not touch ADOM at all until the updates were all done (40+ new artifacts... drool), but the new tiles were just too much for me. After a very disappointing loss of a monk in BugVille that should of been a winner, and the suicide of a dwarf duelist with Kinslayer after an acid vortex ate his climbing set in TotHK (what are the odds?), I have my first pre-release win!

    I played ADOM from 2005-2009 and won about 5 times. I wanted my first win for the Resurrected ADOM to be a long blade wielding high elf duelist. While I suspect dwarf and drakelings probably make better duelists, the HE approach is just so much classier and more enjoyable to role play.

    This guy was meant to be a high dex/speed fighter, relying on the elven chain mail to get me through the early game. The plan worked = 150ish speed by the end, just insane. Couple that with grand mastery in swords and the duelist energy reduction power, and I would attack 3-5 times before the enemy could get a hit off. I never used missiles besides the black torc for karmics, didn't use magic either. Pure melee.

    Started with the Puppy Cave and saved the dog. Then visited the druid dungeon for a decent missile weapon for karmics. Found an N altar, converted and crowned. I love early N crowns on a duelist (the SoCR from the mystic don't hurt either). They have great class gifts except for bug biter, and if I'm going to get that horrible spear I want to know early. Precrowned with rapier of the needle - while Executor and Kinslayer are better weapons, I wanted the rapier to fit my high speed/dex build. Used it to melee everyone including Fisty to death.

    Used potions of holy water to get the druid corpse back to town - first potion of corruption removal. This game was rolling in corruption removal. I saved Khelly after a wish from Dark Forge pools, found 3 scrolls on the ground, found a few potions, brought 3 corpses to the druid, cleared the Maze.. by the time of D50, I had 12 scrolls and 5 potions, and that's after whacking the ACW, ASB, Nuurag Vaarn, and Fisty with potions of cure corruption. This made the ACW especially easy. He was in the red after one potion, and quickly meleed to death.

    Ancient Dragon tension room got me a wish which in turn got me 7lb. Indispensable.

    No artifacts in the casino, but I was a powerhouse by that pointed so I decided to do the Minotaur Maze. My damage was 2d6 + 65 with high chances for criticals, so I planned to melee the emperor to death. To prepare I went to bugville for magic mapping, and then used a writing set for 3 more scrolls. This made the maze very easy - I quickly found 2 false level sixes, then found the real one. For the final minotaur fight, I used a wand of teleport to get the mages away, and then sliced him up in about 6 or 7 hits (used a potion of boost speed to be extra safe). For my troubles I got 3 PoCC, 6 PoGA, and the mighty preserver. Ate the corpse too. This dungeon is 100% worth it.

    D 46 had a greater vault of Giants which is the best, but unfortunately the artifacts were Suns Messenger, Protector, and Wyrmlance. I was really hoping for BoW, but you can't have it all. Found lots of corruption removal there, so I can't complain. No potion of uselessness for D49, which was also sad.

    Arrowmashed my way through D50. Was never in danger at all, and even meleed multiple balors at once. Duelists are beasts by the end game - my only character who was better in melee was a Justifier Paladin.

    Closed the gate, burned my chaos removal and so didn't do the unicorn quest. Should've quaffed one more potion since I had a bit more than zero corruption, but who cares got the happy ending.

    Great character, great stats, great game.

    also, I love the name of this character. Nothing beats princess bride references, except maybe... maybe next do a paladin named Monty.

    Too bad the crowning gift wasn't the gloves of St. Montojja, but what can you do when the RNG doesn't get the references?

    Congrats! Was that the black torc training boomerangs and scurgari? I don't recall that RFE being implemented.
