    Default How to clear undead greater vault?

    tl;dr: I'm a noob, I want to clear an undead vault with a GE wizard, good players please give me advice on how.


    The last time I tried, there were like 12 king and emperor liches that drained each of my stats to about -99. That character somehow made it to D:50 and died there. This time I'm playing as a Grey Elf wizard (because I'm a noob and I've never won the game so I picked an easier class) and my first greater vault is again an undead one. I want to clear it (for the first time ever) more than I want to win the game (for the first time ever). And not just teleport in and out with the stuff either, I want to actually kill what's there, partly due to ego and partly because my character needs levels anyway. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

    The character log file is below. I'm currently in the casino, and plan to gamble to buy useful items in the shop, descend to obtain the Ring of the Master Cat (because cave tigers were summoned in the vault, so I ran), then come back for the vault. I think I can afford the corruption incurred by doing so because I have many sources of corruption removal (as long as they don't get destroyed). The character is permanently invisible, which I assume helps. I think my main problems are my pitifully small amount of undead slaying ammo, the fact that I've never shot a bow in my life, and the fact that my only source of confusion resistance is a ring of the clear mind. If these problems, along with whatever I didn't think of, make this vault very difficult or impossible for me to clear, please let me know too.

    It depends on the layout of the vault, whether it is doable with this character. Which is basically only one or two types, but it sounds like an Emperor Lich has already spotted you from the cave tigers summons you mentioned. BTW, the ring of the master cat won't help you in this regard. They will still be hostile and the ring will explode on your finger if you kill one. That's all from me, I haven't cleared a GV without missile weapons yet. So don't want to give you the wrong advise, although I feel you should skip this desire and move on the a win rather.

    You seem quite powerful. Should not be a problem to clear that UD vault.
    Just read you r scroll of peace, cast farsight, and start blasting with MM or firebolt. Remember to keep your distance. Don't let them get near you, teleport away if necessary.

    edit; oh, use digging to make a nice "pipe" for them.

    The reason I want the ring first is because I want the ring at all, not because I want to use it for the fight. The vault is a large diamond shape, with ghost lords and specters on the perimeter and the emperor/king liches in the center. Item detection reveals items in the four corners and also items in the center, and I don't know which items I'm actually after. Thanks for the quick reply, by the way.

    EDIT: two more questions regarding equipment:
    1. Is it viable to use the black torc as an alternative to unskilled arrows of undead slaying?
    2. Should I switch to the eternium plate mail which has 5 more PV but doesn't have the "empowered" prefix?

    Maybe I'm a noob but I would try to teleport into the vault when there is space and then cast Fire/Acid/Lightning Ball until things are dead. Are you death ray resistant? If not maybe wear the mummy wrapping. I wouldn't use any missiles as wizard: it will take ages to get close to the kings/emperors that way.

    Empowered means that you have additional PP regeneration rate which isn't particularly necessary for a GE wizard with 100 concentration.
    Go get the cat ring first but don't put it on. As long as the ring is not on your finger, you can slaughter cats however you like. When done, just put it on again. I'm not 100% sure this is still possible, I know it could be done in the past. Maybe somebody else knows for certain.
    Look for helm and/or ring of mental stability in the casino, they will help you with confusion, emp liches are pretty good at confusing but with two sources and high willpower you're good to go.
    You have plenty of fireball castings at +18 effectivity, that's your tool.
    All liches are particularly vulnerable to fire, the vault liches have a high level and shrug bolts very often which is why I'd advise against using firebolts or magic bolts against them, at least when they aren't in a line.
    They can't shrug fireballs though.
    With 48+ Willpower, you have a range 3 fireball, this is a destructive tool.
    Put on your Ancient Mummy Wrapping - you need a source of death ray resistance as emp liches cast death rays, unless you have it intrinsically, in which case put on that eternium plate mail. It's better than what you currently have.
    Make sure you have lots of piety with your deity. You can easily get your power points restored by prayer, twice or 3 times if there's a need.
    This is one of the few instances in the game that you might actually find that very useful rather than just waiting for PP regeneration. That empowered armor won't help you much with that, it's only 20% more.
    Get into coward mode. You can let the monsters surround you as long as they are not king/emperor liches. Only those two are the only dangerous drainers.
    With 51 Willpower, all the other monsters will have a VERY hard time draining your toughness or strength - those are the two attributes they can drain, especially vampires. They need to punch through armor for that to happen.
    If you have intrinsic luck + fate, you should be fine, just don't be cursed and/or doomed, but you probably know that already.

    Fireball them until they are gone, then move further in. When yellow or black L shows up, keep one empty square between you and them and keep blasting fireballs till kingdom come.
    That's how it's done on wizard. You are a gray elf. Aging attacks can't bother you since you're technically immortal anyway, in terms of age. Ghosts of all kinds are not a threat.
    If your strength is drained by vamps, you don't worry either, you have strength of atlas.
    You can easily let them get close and personal as long as your DV is ~100 and PV ~30. They are the meat shields here, the lesser threat.
    There is no point clearing the outer vault first - you will only make room for liches inside to summon more meat shields and some can be pretty nasty.
    Ancient Karmic Dragons, quickling queens, molochs, wyrms and ogre kings all have been observed. You want to prevent that from happening - as long as the vault only has undead inside, your fireball damages them all, no exceptions.
    Open the interior asap and fall back a little to let them spill out of the room. Use farsight and bolt them with fire or magic bolts when they are single file.
    They will shrug a lot but with your attributes, many bolts might get through.

    If I were you, I'd just teleport inside as soon as there was a single free spot and fireball them till the end, praying for PP, but that's tricky and you might want to let them in one at a time.
    If you fall back to the corridor and use bolts, lich kings/emps will inevitably wander towards you and the choke point will make it hard for them to summon many monsters.
    Use that against them. Fire is your brother here, use only fire against liches, there are no undead resistant to it and most are especially vulnerable.
    They drop stuff that will be destroyed by fire but what you're most interested in are artifacts which are of course indestructible.
    Adapt. If you see they summon stuff that is immune to fire, fall back or magic bolt them.
    If they seem to surround you AND you're running out of PP, teleport away.
    If lich kings/emps panic - chase them and fireball them. They will use spells to recover full health so make sure your fireball damage to them is continuous. Don't waste time to pick items up.
    With their health restoration spells, one turn can make a difference between critically injured emp lich and one that is not injured.
    Bless those two scrolls of power you have. Each recovers ~200 PP when read, if you're playing 1.2.0 prerelease 5+.
    This method worked for me every time, I have cleared a few GUVs that way. Have fun.

    EDIT: One more thing. Depending on the level layout, sometimes it's a very good choice to lock the original doors leading to the vault and make a new entry - dig a looong tunnel where you can bolt stuff with bouncing bolts - lightning or magic - or just straight on with firebolts. Monsters will inevitably fill the tunnel and of all the vault creatures, liches have the best tracking ability so they should come first. I had vaults cleared of liches with few to no summons at all using this method. You just need to let them know you are there and then teleport away to your newly dug corridor.

    The correct way which will also save all equipment drop is to stand near the entrance to the inner room and repeatedly zap magic missile there (line it up to ensure multiple bounces within room). Put all Willpower-increasing equipment for better confusion resistance and higher range for magic missile.
    This way nothing will ever touch you.
    If a higher lich gets into melee range, don't retreat - just scorch them with Burning Hands. Even emperors will drop in 1-2 castings with that +47 efficiency and your Willpower score.

    Pro tip: If I were you, I'd cast Slow Monster on myself for the whole duration of the vault. Better to avoid this if you are not confident though.

    EDIT: forgot to mention, but your chances to get confused even without the ring are really small. 51 Willpower is a lot.

    You can always go save Ancardia, and *then* go back up and clear the vault, with the extra experience levels that you'll have gained.
