Question [Help out a newbie] What to wish for - for the late game?

After being bolted with a death-ray by Nuurag (as written in the YASD lore), Tharkun the dwarven healer was immediately reincarnated -- this time born under Raven, really smoothing the early game. And now he is again looking forward to tackling the MT and beyond, hopefully achieving the first victory for his controller!

Being a bit stunned at getting this far in two consequent games, I really feel I owe it to Tharkun to make more effort to be adequately prepared this time around. For the MT the corrective action is obvious, but there is another thing of which I would like to ask for an advice. I found a RoDS in levels under Khelly, and stashed it, as I didn't feel like urgently needing anything at that point. Now, however, I'm really thinking about whether to spend the wish at this point to increase Tharkun's chances in the challenges ahead.

Hence the classic question of what to wish for.

Current situation is following. I have cleared the Air Temple and scouted my way into D:48 and back. Have not retrieved the Earth Orb yet, but don't expect major troubles there (famous last words). Glancing through the earlier threads related to wishing did not reveal anything I could recognize as blatantly obvious best choice at this point.

Here's what I have been considering:

    1. PoGAs. My attribute values are pathetic due to having horrid luck with herb levels (herbs disappeared after a couple of turns from both big gave and VDDL!) and Garth meeting a tragic early death. I'll have a strengh of less than 20 without the fire orb. But I'm not sure how important it is to improve this for the end game. Also, I'm guessing that a wish will only yield a couple of potions.

    2. 7LB would of course be helpful, but I already have decent speed, don't need to visit the wilderness again, and teleportitis lessens the need as well.

    3. Acid ball would be quite handy, especially as I haven't found any non-guaranteed offensive spells whatsoever (except from sources of Wonder). However, I'm a bit worried about what the PP requirements might be, and haven't really felt a dire need for offensive spells thus far, so there might be more important things to wish for.

    4. It seems that corruption probably won't be a major problem, although the 90 days limit is at hand. For removing any showstoppers I have one scroll and one potion stashed, along with thick gauntlets. I guess there is still a chance that I would desperately need more removal at some point.

    5. I'm a bit nervous of lacking resistance for paralyzation and petrification, so I might wish for an amulet against either of those. On the other hand starting to be less nervous is probably much more dangerous than keeping the indestructable Ankh around my neck and waiting for a gorgon to lurk behind every corner.

    6. An amulet of death ray resistance could be useful in the mana temple, as it would allow me to keep wearing my excellent precrowning gift with the +15 speed. I'm really hoping the death ray resistance pretty much equals immunity, so either the amulet or AMW alone will suffice.

    7. Hmm.. I wonder if it were a bad idea to keep the ring around in case there is an opportune moment for wishing for a Banshee? I have a potion of deafness that could be used instead of / in addition to wax, in case any explosions are possible.

So, I'm grateful for any ideas and suggestions. If you have suggestions not directly related to wishing, those are also more than welcome. I have still kept myself in the dark regarding the specifics of what awaits after D:48, but at this point I'm not exceedingly averse to spoilers anymore, especially those related to potential sources of instant death further on.

I think there are going to be varied opinions. I would be torn between spellbooks of Acid Ball and scrolls of corruption removal. Acid ball, well, it's acid ball, it's always great if you can cast it. About corruption, take into account that D:50 is WAY more corrupting than the other levels you have been in. You'll see when you get there. If you want to do the "straight" gate closing killing all the balors, you're going to get corrupted, I personally like to have several SoCR's at hand to avoid nasty surprised.

About the other options, your stats look fine enough to me, not "pathetic" at all, maybe because I don't farm. But there's no problem finishing the game with those stats. 7LB's have been significantly nerfed (if you're playing a new prerelease), apart from the fact that you don't need them with that speed. The protection that you get from amulet of petrification resistance isn't better than the one you get from your teleportation spell, which you can use if you see a gorgon. The amulet of death ray resistance is not bad but it would only be a wish for the mana temple fight, when acid ball/corruption removal are useful for the whole rest of the game, I'd just use the AMW. And banshee, meh, that's scummy.

In case of SoCRs, keep in mind that they are much less durable than the ring, so maybe you should only wish for them when the time has come to use them.

First of all: you should equip that axe in your left hand. That way you get the set bonus of +10 damage.

The common sense way to use your wish is to keep it for level 50 and decide there what serves you better: scrolls of chaos resistance or wands of destruction.

Your stats are adequate, don't worry. Don't wish for poga. You will only get 1.

Wishing for spellbooks of acid ball, idk. You're a healer and you might not receive enough castings to make it worth it.

Wishing for amulets would be underwhelming. When you fight the archmage, just equip the AMW. Multiple sources of -death don't stack. You are either resistant or not.

Wishing for a banshee and clear bugcave is a cool alternative, but more dangerous. You would receive scrolls of chaos resistance, a wand of teleportation, healing items and more. You'd also receive enough scrolls of magic mapping to make the minotaur maze doable. The rewards for the minotaur maze are great now, so it's worth a shot if you dare.

Speaking of wand of teleportation, I don't see it in your inventory. There is a guaranteed one near the assassin prince, did you know?
You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

I also like to wish for wands of death before MT & D:50, makes life there much easier. I'd probably save it for D:50 if I didn't have a wand of destruction, though.

Excellent. Thank you for the quick and thoughtful replies. Especially good to know about the leap in corruption level in D:50.
Based on what has been said, the way to go about the wish is now quite clear. I will keep the ring for D:50, and - if I get that far - then use it as the situation calls for.

I don't yet have a hundred games under my belt, so the bug cave isn't an option. The teleportation wand I forgot to pick up from my stash for the .vlg file (just came back from the Air Temple to my stash before taking the .vlg).

Also very good to know about the bonus for wielding in left-hand.

BTW, I'm really enjoying your LP videos GordonOverkill. Just stumbled upon them Yesterday. I think I'll relax for tonight with Gordurian episode 3

great idea, i did this recently and its actually well worth the effort. its surprisingly easy if you can tank a few killer bugs. And the spring on from 8 magic mapping means the minotaur maze is about 10x easier.

The other left field suggestion would be to wish for "gardening" and use it to populate your own herbs (assuming you have access to *some* herbs at some point - even 1 set of 2x2) which would give you a huge amount of dex depending on your potentials.

this isn't the way adom is meant to be played! The minotaur maze is intended to be walked manually, not navigated via magic mapping scrolls.
"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."

You don't get a bonus for the Rolf set if you have the axe in the right hand? I had no idea.

    Yeah, Rolf is left handed.

Wait, you actually use the walk commands? That is scumming of the worst kind. You are supposed to wait until Minotaurs confuse you and the random movement ends you up on the bottom of the maze.
