Learnt something new: you can drown while wearing chainmail of the sea
I had a promising ratling farmer who was drowned in NDL by Giant dragon turtle at level 20. At around level 15 I was lucky enough to find a ring shop from which i bought 2 rings of regeneration, therefore I hadn't had problems with any monsters in few levels. It was my second char to make it to NDL and the first time I had no problems clearing the monsters and talking to the dragon.
This time, I had no problems with sharks, eels or water elementals, talked with the dragon and started making my way back out of the cave, until i ran into a giant turtle. Started meleeing it, heard a bling noice and looked at my hp: -255(148).

Armor of the sea works just like rings of the fish, as far as I know. Their effectiveness depends on B/U/C status, and they don't reduce damage from water breath attacks.
At this point in the game, the only thing you should do with dragon turtles is avoiding them at all costs. Darkness and invisibility aren't as effective as they used to be, but teleporting them away works fine.
"And light there be!"

Yeah, it's not drown damage though. You were washed away, no? Kinetic damage in other words.
Water breathing does not give immunity to these attacks, I have a strong feeling it reduces the damage though.
Learn to learn.

Yeah IIRC I was washed away, not 100% sure though. In flg-file it just says: "Jupe, the ratling farmer, was drowned by a giant dragon turtle."

Water breath is worse than death rays - at least those you can have some resistance to! Water breath, you get a bad roll and it does 1,000 damage.
