    Default Experience and speed

I thought, oh don't bother about speed and exp and as much as I don't want to bother it seems the exp penalty for high speed is much higher than I thought.
I now play with "display exp = true" and on the one hand it's fun to see when I get huge amounts of exp but otoh it detracts attention from the game a bit.

I've had a paladin past casino at around exp lvl 23, think it was my drakeling who probably got close to no exp in toef.
Exp loss for high speed seems almost exponential.
Does anyone know approximates for speed vs exp?

(And no, I'm not fond of the "slow monster on self", that seems way too risky.)

A speed of 200 would halve the xp gained from monsters compared to 100.

As far as I'm concerned, xp is not nearly as important as having high speed is good, so I have yet to find myself caring one bit about the experience penalty. I typically play large parts of the mid-game at Strained or Strained!, though, since that helps with Strength training anyway and I've usually gotten tanky enough not to care - weight is easy to get rid of if you absolutely need to run, after all. That you get more experience this way is just a happy accident.

Just as an example, I actually have no idea what level range my characters tend to be at the Casino (other than it being generally 20+), simply because a character's level tells you very little - but any character that reaches the Casino has made it past the ToEF, and that fact is much more telling. Most of a character's power comes from equipment and/or attributes, and to some degree from weapon skills and the width of selection of useful items in the inventory. Levels do make a difference in HP scores and class powers and such, but the difference between level 23 or, say, level 26 is usually miniscule.

There's a fairly steep level requirement for a certain ultra ending quest, so maybe if your ambitions swing that way you might worry about this stuff more. And then there are the lunatics who willingly play trolls...
ADOM Guides - whatever you wanted to know about playing a certain class, but have been afraid to ask!

Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.

Ok , thanks half from 200 speed isn't too bad then I don't need to care and can turn off exp.
I think my "fast" paladin had around 125 speed (quickling corpse, cat lord ring etc).

About levels, I notice a huge difference with the gnome I'm playing at the moment, but also gnomes need less exp, will soon do ToEF at lvl 32-33 wich is a lot higher lvl than I'm used to.
