    Default Eternium Man

    I spent the last couple days experimenting with Eternium man in r60 to see how it went, and this is by far my best one. I decided to run this on Monster Difficulty "Low" and Treasure Drop Rate "High". This makes a stupidly large difference in how tolerable the SMC is. It's still dangerous once you're above level 10, but it's playable.

    The plan was to roll a Dwarf Farmer. I wanted a farmer to be able to grow herbs; I wanted a dwarf so that I could max out my toughness, get extra PV from Mithril Skin, and start Lawful. Lawful start is important, IMHO, since you have at least a possibility, albeit a dangerous one, of converting an N or C altar if you come across one. N altars don't allow you to sacrifice enough monsters to help in this sort of situation, and C altars are too dangerous to play with for long periods of time.

    I rolled a Candle-born Farmer, 6 starting herb seeds, grabbing TH with starting talents. Stats weren't great, only 10 starting To (but a potential of like 30), but I was literate, and it takes awhile to get an altar, so you gotta take what you can get. I explored around the level, grabbing the blanket and tracking down a Lawful altar. Invested early skill increases into Food Pres, Gardening and Herbalism. At level 5 I had high enough gardening to make a morgia/pepper herb box, so I started pumping To at that point. I mostly hung out around the altar eating herbs and saccing everything I could. I got my precrown around level 10, picking up Preserver. Around the same time, I extended my garden to include moss, spense, and antidote. I didn't bother with stoma until much later since food was pretty plentiful. I picked up poison resist from spiders, acid resist from, I think, an ankheg, and fire resist from a beetle. Equipment-wise, I found an orcish spear of penetration that I used for most of the game, and a crystal dagger that I used for jellies and things. Jelly, worm, etc. infestations happened a few times since I wasn't exploring much of the level. Pretty much the only time I'd venture out was when I needed to clear a bunch of jellies to get the spawns going again. My equipment was pretty good--the ultra-high drop rates from TH + extra gear is pretty excellent, despite sacrificing the majority of the monsters that I encountered. I only had a few close calls early on--a Revenant gave me big problems around level 12 or so.

    At about level 15, the spawn rate was in full collapse. I had to give up on the idea of a second precrown as monsters weren't showing up quickly enough keep my piety from decaying. I had picked up a few pickaxes from dwarven chaos knights, and started digging out all of the walls looking for stone giants to kill. At some point around level 16, a berserker lord randomly dropped Protector. I had about 50/30 DV/PV, health regeneration, and a penetrating weapon. Good enough for the endgame, actually. I got a bit sloppy running around waiting for the spawns, and accidentally damaged my spear on an ochre jelly. I started preserving huge piles of cooked corpses and stockpiling gold and extra gear in the hopes of getting enough piety for another precrown, but I think that was a long shot. Once you're down to 1 monster every 300 turns, you're just losing piety too fast. First corruption was tentacles, which I didn't care about, but at the spawn rate I was working at, corruption was something that would have been a major long-term problem. With the exception of the one that killed me, monsters weren't really a threat.... A randomly spawned uber-fast lightning vortex was able to blast away over 200 HP, killing me instantly at level 17. I only encountered a small handful of lightning lizards, and none ever dropped corpse, so I was definitely weak on that front.

    Total turncount was just under 37000. I think I probably spent the last 10000 or so turns in the time-wasting part.

    Was the spawn rate in SMC working like that in earlier versions too or does it look like a recent bug?

    Is exiting to wilderness for a single turn and returning to SMC permitted? I suspect it could reset the spawn rate of monsters.

    I'm pretty sure it is allowed. Or at least it is more withing spirit of challenge than messing with "Monster Difficulty"...
