I just swap around with him until he's next to me on the down stairway, never had to kill him or anything

Been there, done that. I was handling muscular dwarves pretty well. But shopkeeper was too buffed because of few hundred of sis. One shotted me with one thrown coin. So ye, swapping is dangerous.
