    Default Gadlor, Dwarven Monk, A Long-Awaited Gate Closer

    My first victory ever, I'm embarrassed to say, given how long I've been playing - since Gamma 12 or thereabouts. I.E., when the Drakalor Chain Board of Tourism was still up... always seem to lose characters for silly reasons & getting careless. Not this time!

    I hadn't played much in quite a while (a decade?) but the release of the Steam version got me back into things.

    A short history of Gadlor's route and travails:

    Went through the SMC to the HMV without much problem (my typical route). I was intending on keeping this guy unarmed for the duration, just to see how well it worked.
    Picked up invisibility from a pool either here or in a random dungeon very early on. I also got teleportitis and teleport control very quickly.

    Dove down into the CoC after that avoiding anything that seemed unpleasant (a tension room of ghost kings in the DH, for example). Not many close calls at all. Found a lot of altars, considered going for precrowning but it would have meant missing the Pyramid. Did the Pyramid instead, got crowned with robes of resistance and things got much better from there. Then put on some mummy wrappings and did the Arena pretty late. Found a AoLS way too late for Khelly. Sorry my man.

    Found a pair of seven-league boots, two rings of djinni summoning, a lot of PoGA - and an eternium two hander of penetration in the DarkForge, which (I think) was pretty much what won me this game. Wished for a girdle of giant strength and then just started plowing through enemies. Smithed a bunch of equipment as high as it would go..

    The only enemies that gave me problems were Greater Titans and the higher strength liches - just didn't want to get close and get drained. I had plenty of missile weapons to deal with them, just a big pain to clear out undead vaults. Finding spellbooks for Strength of Atlas helped a lot with making tons of trips to dump gear.

    My first time seeing a lot of things in the game; I think I've always managed to die somewhere around the Earth Temple. The Ice Queen Domain is a cool addition; unfortunately this guy missed out on seeing both the Minotaur Maze (I hadn't been adequately spoiled to realize there was a level requirement) and the Bug Temple (not enough deaths). First time in the Rift since pre-1.0, as well.

    Murdered Fisty and his crew with the help of Rocky the earth elemental, closed the gate, and then decided to see if I could find Filk just for fun. I totally did not take a note of who I killed first; managed to complete the barbarian quest mostly by accident. Ended up going down to ID:100 before giving up, but knocked off MaLaKaL on the way. I then skipped out the Drakalor Chain glad to stop having nightmares of somehow managing to munge this one up. During the ID crawl I played around with acquiring a bunch of random skills by writing scrolls of education...thus all the Alchemy, Law, Ventriloquism, etc.

    I did not, unfortunately, encounter the guy I submitted as a boss monster (but I have in the past; took me a minute or two to realize what had just happened). I really love the new version and all the things that have been added.

    What am I supposed to do with my life now?

    You will soon be hungry of playing again for sure!

    Congratulations, you seem to have nerves of steel. I remember after my first win, with shaking hands, I fled as quickly as possible up to the exit from Ancardia (even without visiting unicorn). You went to seek Filk and killed MaLalKal - respect!
