    Default Wish suggestion - GE wiz

    Let me preface this by saying I'm a pretty bad player who left the game for a long time and is just now coming back for his second overall win (first was with a drakeling healer, but I'm not that fond of drakelings anymore after the IQD addition). I'm hanging out in the Frost Giant Jarl Caves, next to a vault of fire creatures (found vital spellbooks of Frost Bolt and Ice Ball in that dungeon, thankfully). So now I ID'd my inventory before tackling the vault and realized I have a RoDS in my pack, which I'd rather not subject to needless inventory destruction before it finds a use. I haven't proceeded past Khelavaster yet, so in my mind there are three choices:
    a) Red Dragon Scale Mail, both for the vault and the ToEF
    b) Amulet of Life Saving for Khelavaster, which means I'd go and do the Mana Temple for the orb and come back to do FGJC, the Rift, and the ToEF
    c) just for completeness sake, I don't want to wish for Seven League Boots, which for some reason anger the item destruction gods in my games

    I haven't done Darkforge yet, but at this point I'm reluctant to go near pools anyway as to not lose valuable intrinsics (no -Para is unfortunate, but should be manageable, at least more than losing teleport control but not teleportitis). Crowning gift was Staff of the Wanderer (and acid immunity), and I got precrowned with Wyrmlance after an altar popped up in the caverny random dungeon. There's an artifact weapon in the vault, which is likely to be useless, but I figure there's a couple of eternium spears to be had, and Dragons don't shrug off bolts regularly. Cats have been killed (my last promising character, a HE wizard, got the ring, but then the Master Summoner insisted on calling upon an army of cave tigers).

    Anyway, I'd also appreciate any tips on how to tackle the Mana Temple - those energy bolts the Chaos Archmage fires off deal around 100 damage, which is a lot for a squishy wizard, and he shrugs off bolts easily. If I didn't have to worry about that part of the game, this should be a winner unless a magic missile goes wrong. Tips on how to deal with hoarding would also be nice, I'd love to play more martial characters, but the encumbrance is incredibly annoying to deal with without Strength of Atlas.

    with a wizard, I'd usually use my wish to maximize my willpower. So if potential is low I'd wish for potential potions, if above 26, I'd just wish for willpower directly. My goal is 32 or 48 Wi for ball spell bonus but watch out, it makes your magic missle much more dangerous for you.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I'm at my potential right now, and besides the couple points still to gain from morgia, how can I raise my willpower after getting the potential stat increase? Right now the Water Orb takes me to 32, so I'd need to gain at least 11 more points to get to 48 if I equip the Sword of Nonnak. Is it possible to raise potentials that much with a wish, and what's an effective way to train the stat if so?

    I'm sure someone else could give you more accurate numbers, but wishing for potions of potential willpower will get you 2-3 potions which is 6-9 potential when blessed. Eat 4 Mogia root for +1 until you hit 24, then eat a crap-ton and you'll get to 26 possibly 27. You can't train any higher than that to my knowledge.

    Wishing for willpower will get you 3-5 willpower. (Not sure exactly)
    Wishing for potions of willpower will get you 2 potions which is 4 Wi. but you'll lose some water for blessing.

    I think in your situation, because you are about to complete IQD you should wish for willpower or potions of willpower (if you have the water) then the ice queen will get you +2 Wi after the second quest. I only suggest this because it's not worth wasting the time for training this close to the end.

    If you have a decent amount of scrolls already (from mystic) you don't really need to save khelly but it's nice to have since you then don't need to bother.
    This also opens up chaos dipping useless potions with moonsickle to try and get willpower potions.

    Another option is to wish for spellbooks of acid ball, as wizard with that learning you'll get a ton of castings.

    Lastly, what happened to your to?
    How about wishing for potions of potential toughness?

    Hmm, I'm still not entirely convinced I'll actually get to 48 Wi even with the wish. Maybe pot. toughness would be a better idea (the 15 To is even after quaffing two potions of gain attributes, the new hard potential caps really make attributes more interesting), since every point of toughness has a tangible benefit as opposed to wisdom, which until it helps with ball spells only makes bolts more cumbersome to use outside of corridors.

    Since I'm planning on doing the Rift, spellbooks don't seem to be too important either right now. The Mystic I totally forgot about and it's probably not worth falling to get the scrolls, so those are gone. Right now I'm carrying all the means of corruption removal I have with me, so it's two potions and a scroll, which at least makes the scrolls writeable. PoGA recipe from Alchemy is strength and longevity, neither of which I have found yet, but the latter is easily mixable from stomafillia and extra healing. I guess wishing for potions of strength would result in a +2 to all attributes, maybe that's something to consider too.

    It's between potions of potential toughness and an Amulet of Life Saving then.

    Also you could wish for eternium full plate mails for 2 (or 3?) there's a small chance of getting a pre/suffix. I had a weaponsmith wish for one and it was of life, but many other characters only got normal ones.

    Or if your dv needs a boost you could do crystal tower shields.

    Locked doors+acid Ball is probably easiest. Assuming you can get hands on acid ball (which is wish worthy). I also don't know which abilities he looses after PoCC (sadly does not seem to remove Death ray -- slicing stuff).

    Late in game probably chaos alchemy. Recycling potions for stat ones is grindy, but typically worth the effort.

    absolutely not true - toughness gives some minor (like 1 hp per two points directly), but the rest comes on hiting breakpoints - 16/18/20/23/26/29/34/38/45/50/60/70/80/90 - so upgrading to 20 would be three breakpoints for 3x charlevel HP (that is actually a lot).
    Wilppower also gives char level man on breakpoints (20/28/36-- on each +8 after)


    I am not sure why you want mana orb that b adly, just nuking earth temple for few levels might be better.

    So far rolled 15 casters with RoDS and shamelessly killed them within 200 turns. For eternium glory!

    I caught a couple of lucky breaks on this char:

    - cleared out the greater vault in FJGC to find two pairs of Seven League Boots and (wait for it) Cat's Claw, also one of each potion of pot. toughness and willpower
    - found a statue I missed on a UD river level, that dropped two potions of strength -> two PoGA via Alchemy
    - used two ring shops in UD and upper CoC to obtain another RoDS via Exchange dipping

    So what I think is going to happen is I get potions of potential toughness and an AoLS, let morgia work its magic through the water temple and Darkforge, gulp down a couple PoGa, get the ice queen reward, and attributes-wise that should be a fairly solid basis to get through the endgame.

    Dispatched the legendary large spider Water Spider Assault Unit.
    I ended up getting the Plutonium Man achievement, even though I declined to deal with a threat room of Ki-Rins in the lower CoC. The Minotaur Maze was incredibly boring (and confusion wasn't an issue with high Wi and two things of mental stability), never going back there, even though it gave me Protector and a RoDS that was used for Acid Ball castings. The shield really was the only good non-guaranteed artifact I found in the game, but wizards don't depend on equipment anyway - all I needed for D:50 was high-efficiency Magic Missiles, Seven League Boots and ball spells. At some point in the unreal caves I realized I'd left almost all my corruption removal in a random dungeon before doing the ToEF, but it didn't matter in the end except for being unable to eat all the orb guardians. Gauntlets of Eternal Peace on D:48, Scorched Spear was generated in a random tension room. I tried to sacrifice Sharad-Waador for exp, but he appears to dodge altars, so he got Magic Missile'd to death also.

    After the point I made this thread, there only was one real close call: a mixed tension room on the Earth Temple level containing a greater moloch and a greater titan. I tried digging a ring of corridors to avoid being cornered (looking back I should've just lured the titan to another level, taking 100 dmg eternium quarrels every round is not worth the hassle), but in the end got sandwiched between them and had no choice but to tank the moloch and desperately hope that he'd get Acid Balled to death before the titan made it to melee range. After that point, the character was strong enough to deal even with my generally poor play, and the RNG cooperated in throwing more boltable ancient dragons, diamond golems and greater molochs at me than really scary stuff like high-level liches and titans. The stairs on the cat lord level were generated close together, so I didn't even see him. After this, I'm probably going to play a monk or archer, which should be more challenging in the late game.
