Default Mission Impossible: Rules of the Game

If people haven't followed the Roman Republic discussion too closely, here are the final rules for our new game - Mission Impossible.

Players are divided into teams - currently 5 teams of 5 - and assigned 5 races and 5 classes. The races are random, the classes are based on a preference list of sorts (only the team leaders need to worry too much about this), and teams must match up their races and classes as they see fit. The characters for each class are then generated with random starsign, and each player starts one up. The game is divided into 6 strict missions that must be followed - deviation from the mission structure and the allowed locations during each mission means you're out of the game. At the end of each mission the save files must be swapped around the team, with each person taking over a different character for the next mission. A bit like a relay race... You have 6 days to complete each mission, with 1 day then spent arranging save swaps. If you die or fail a mission then both you and the character are out of the game, and the team must carry on with the remaining players and characters. Your team scores 1 point for every completed mission, and the team with the most points in the end wins.

There are 4 team captains with their own discussion threads:
    gut
    Silfir
    JellySlayer
    Grey

There is also a Flaming thread, for any pyromaniacs out there.

If you have not signed up yet and you're worried about teams being full etc then please post here and we'll accommodate you. State whether you'd prefer to play server or non-server. We may start up another team if it's needed...

    The Missions

Mission I: Mountain Village. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reach the High Mountain Village. Save upon entering the village.
Allowed locations: Terinyo, Bandit village, VD, DD, PC, SMC, UD, Dusty Dungeon (note no ID)

Mission II: Dwarftown. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reach the town of dwarves and speak to the dwarven elder about quests. You may complete as many of these quests as you like, staying only in the CoC. You may not go more than 1 level deeper than the dwarven halls/animated forest. This is the only opportunity in the game to talk to the elder about quests (thus you cannot receive rewards for more later in the game). Save after reaching the elder and having done as many quests as you wish.
Allowed locations: Caverns of Chaos only, down to the level below DH/AF.

Mission III: Portal. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to open the dwarven portal sealing off the lower CoC. You may also visit certain other surface locations during this time. Save the game after pulling the lever or getting Thrundarr to pull it.
Allowed locations: Early CoC, Dwarven Graveyard, Pyramid, barbarian's glade, all areas from mission I (note still no ID).

Mission IV: Water. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pass Khelevaster, retrieve the orb of water, and descend to the wall of flames. Once you pass the ancient sage you may not return upwards, and only touching the wall of flames with the water orb will unlock the upper CoC for you again. Save upon reaching the wall of flames with the water orb in your possession.
Allowed locations: CoC only, from DT down to the wall of flames. Further restricted after passing Khelevaster.

Mission V: Fire. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to arrange for the death of the Ancient Chaos Wyrm by whatever means available and attain the orb of Fire. You must save upon exiting the Tower of Eternal Flames with the orb in your possession.
    Allowed locations: All except ID.

Mission VI: Gate. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to close the Chaos Gate, stop the source of corruption in Ancardia and exit the Drakalor Chain. Failure to complete this mission will result in death. This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds...
    Allowed locations: All except ID.

What about time limits for these missions, either in game or real time?
To this day I have not once scummed in ADOM.
Probably why I dont have a win.

It already says that 6 days of real time.
1 ULE, 1 UNE, 18 regular endings. Won with every race. Trying to win with every class. Never won with farmer, merchant, mindcrafter and thief.

We may need a new team as there appear to be at least 3 people (including me) who don't have a team yet. I'm still finishing the Intro and Scoring Post. Get your lists in Captains! I figure the final team will be a random team chosen randomly from the picks of the other teams. One from the first picks, one from the second picks...and so on.

How about putting up a new signup thread for those w/o teams? I see 4 team-less. Me, you and it appears that furious_styles and Lich are w/o teams. (I seem to recall a 5th somewhere... not sure)

I guess you would be the captain right Baranor

Why the restriction to 5 people per team? It was just a suggestion by Silfir, and a nice number for 4 teams to make all of the classes appear at least once. There's nothing wrong with expanding the team sizes and the number of characters per team and just cycling through the class preferences a second time for the extras. Otherwise if a 5th team is made then we still don't need to convolute the class choices or make the new team different in any way - we just extend the existing picking system like Molach suggested.

It is the ideal. But there's problems with the classes. Because with 10 races appearing twice you get a perfect 20. With 24 players, 4 teams of 6, we would have to establish a maximum of 3 repetitions for races. Then, every team would pick another extra race from the original 10.

On classes thou... we would have to allow 1 repetition, since there are only 20 classes. 4 would be repeated, and then the lists would have to change, meaning that every team could rank one class twice (probably the most desireable class, in the first and second position). This would change the current strategy by a lot, since this would allow a certain team to put, for example... two assassins as 1st and second... since it's unlikely that assassins are the first or second pick of anyone else... this team would mos likely end up with two assassins. Strategy changes a lot, and all teams would have to re-pick their class preferences.

If everyone is willing to do that, I'm up for 4 teams of 6 members. The 5th team is just so that the current teams strategies aren't disturbed.

I'd like to join one of the non-server teams as well. Just finished reading the whole original post, posted there, than saw this is the place for new applicants, in fact. My, you guys sure got active while I was hiking for a week. So, how do we proceed? Am I too late?

Well.. I guess we'll have to wait a little more... right now the 6th man team has 5 memebers and Jack the ripper just signed in as a 6th one. So we have 26 players. Not possible to divide by four. We might wait until we have 28, and then make 4 teams of 7 members.

That's not necessary at all - just use the original class rankings and the second class rankings. Don't allow any duplicates within a team (duplicates across the competition are fine). Extra races would be random, with the restriction that a team can't have the same race more than twice (ie reroll 3rd appearances).

Adding new teams leads to trouble when we get even more people signing up - we can't just keep adding. It's easier to add to existing teams and have the latecomers adhere to their rules.
