    Default Ultra help

Hey there! New poster, 5+ year player and lurker. Had my first gate close recently and of course I'm aspiring for that Ultra. While I know the process down to the T, I am not comfortable with a route. Also I'm not comfortable with alignment changing. If anyone had the time to A. Post letting me know their process for changing alignment during an ultra attempt including if there is a point where it's practically impossible if your too high leveled. And B. If there is anyone out there who does enough ultra attempt reps that they can layout their exact route or just approximate level when doing each task that'd be awesome (obviously you can omit level for tasks required in normal ending as I'm familiar with those). It's a bit overwhelming and off putting to attempt it without having a good layout for my strategy. I'm good at adapting to what I'm given but bad at performing without some sort of direction. Thanks! And apologies for the text wall I'm posting this on my phone during a 10 minute break at work lol. My mind is preoccupied with thoughts or becoming an Avatar!

The higher the level, the harder it is to change alignment. But still is possible.

Using healing spells on creatures you did not damage is a useful way to become more L.
Going C is easy by luring dwarves out of Dwarftown and killing them, or grave digging.

Getting in good graces with the new god is tricky, but can be done with cash and careful sacrificing. Drop you stuff, keep an artifact in hand. And pay with Cash

Wait are you saying a neutral God will smite a neutrally aligned character if you were evil long enough and have terrible standings? I've heard of dropping items so they don't all get destroyed. Can this happen after becoming like NC from an N God? And is the artifact kept in hand so the god tries to blow up inventory instead of smiting and summoning monsters to kill you? I'm not very familiar with the god mechanics. I've also heard of people donating 1 gold at a time to change alignment or something. Is this viable and is it better than healing creatures?

it depends what kind of ultra you are trying to do and what alignment you are currently on. Getting to N= or C- is actually easy, because N= you just need to find a lawful alter and sacrifice up to N=. C- you can just slaughter dwarfton.

Healing is used to get from L to L+, since you cannot sacrifice up to L+.

You should read the guidebook and wiki for more information.

Oh nice those are some good tips. I haven't seemed to see that detailed of stuff about alignment changing on the guidebool but maybe I didn't look enough. Also when doing this will the altar convert? its the 1 gold at a time technique you're talking about right?

Also what about levels for the specific parts. For instance what would you say is safe bet as far as level goes to take out the dragon guarding the crown? The moloch seems a bit easier just through kiting it might not matter what level as much as what items. But the dragon has some nasty attacks I hear that might make him a little sketchier to fight. Thanks for the help guys.

Sacrificing small amounts of gold (1 piece) at a time brings the PC to the altar's alignment.
Sacrificing large amounts of gold (3k and above is a safe bet) brings the altar to PC's alignment.

You need darknight to enter stone circle and get the crown. Darknight occurs when you start the game and then again every 30 days.
Knowing that you can plan accordingly, depending on how you feel about your HP and items.
Dragon is relatively easy with 7LB and dragon slayers, just train your missile weapon a bit before and learn to avoid diagonals.
Also remember to have confusion resistance.

Emp moloch can be dispatched with supercharged wand of magic missiles or demon/humanoid slayers.
Also with aotme if you're fast but that is obviously more risky.

I personally prefer lawful ultras, because once you're done with Gaaby's quests, you can switch alignment permanently to L and enjoy less corruption overall plus easier chaos plane.
I typically do the chaos medal quests between levels 20-30, as at that point you should have visited several areas and cleared some vaults, which might yield either the required items, including artifacts or a wish.
At level 30 it's still quite easy to change alignment and get to the extreme.
Getting to level 45 is straightforward with a wish if you have not killed emperor moloch, which is why I usually postpone his death till the last moment possible.
This is especially useful for pushing alignment from L to L+. Greater molochs are highly chaotic and killing them grants considerable lawful boost.

I mostly do my ultras as raven-born character as this makes rune trident available early on, so you can train throwing it.
It's a demon slayer and with strong thrower talent, it's really efficient at dealing with greater molochs while standing on a frozen island.
It's also nice to generate weapon marks for totrr as you need to be wielding it when chaos god falls.
It's not necessary to damage him with it but the damage dice on totrr is huge and it's a demon slayer as well, so probably the best weapon against andor anyway.

    My approach:

    1. Early game: many people will start with SMC / HMV dive. Personally I tend to play R/C combinations that start out squishy and I prefer to just generate the SMC and leave till later, when I have invisibility and teleportation.

    2. Early to mid game, I just play the game normally, but with the additional goal of finding an Aols or a wish for one. The best shot you have is pool sipping, so I will store a spare blink dog and build up enough piety to remove doom at an altar. I will also make a mental note which altar is easiest to reach from Darkforge.
Once I am strong enough to handle steel golems easily I start sipping.
There is about 50% chance that sipping fails to yield a wish. The next option is then to dip rings into potions of exchange. Milk potion/ring shops if you have been lucky enough to find any.
In case that fails too, the next try is chaos alchemy to create more potions of exchange. Hang on to every worthless potion you find for this purpose. Hopefully the scythe of corruption is generated before you run into Khelavaster.
If that also fails, I will scout the treasure hoard of the water dragons for Ordinary Rings.
If *that* fails, the character wasn't meant to be an ultra. If you want a sure shot, you could generate characters at Donation day for the amulet of resurrection.

    3. So let's say I succeed at step 2. The rest is relatively easy. The first thing I will do next is to rescue Khelavaster and finish the Dwarf quests, grabbing the water orb on the dive down.

    4. By this time you will have accumulated enough junk artifacts to satisfy the demented ratling, especially if you took the druid quest: black torc, sword of nonnak, phial, crown of science, ancient scythe, plus some black tome from precrowning or something. I will happily sac the Golden Gladius too, but that's just me.
Once you are finished, talk to Gaab'baay and receive the Boar Skull quest.

    5. As soon as you have the boar skull quest, you are free to switch to your final alignment and crown. I will do so right away, to receive the benefits of crowning. At such an early level, changing alignment is no problem at all.

    6. Now I will gather all the orbs as in a normal game. If it is a melee character, I will aim to get the Axe of the Minotaur Emperor after returning from the casino through the DF shortcut.
I will also enter the Library at some point for the additional SoCR.

    7. Finally, I will wrap up the Ultra quests at my leisure, starting with the blue dragon caves and any non-undead greater vaults. At this point a non-troll should be able to reach level 45 through normal play (don't play troll). I will leave the stone circle for last, it is a dangerous fight and there is no hurry at all.

    8. Do not forget paralysis resistance in the final fight. His melee attack is weak but being paralysed there WILL kill you; he is basically an oversized mimic.

    Good point.

As an alternative you can do what the famous Porkman did on the adom server: build an arch farmer, power him up to absurd levels in the wilderness, not notice the weather, have your spellbook of wish destroyed by rain, then build a herb garden on the chaos plane while Andor Drakon tries in vain to make a dent in your armor.
