Just had to add regarding original post, killed a gorgon in ud mixed vault (wand of lightning) around lvl 10. With a little bit of missile training or wands they're easy.

But I did just get a bit grumpy when a. Thrundarr give me lightning lizard quest, b. heading back up to dwarf town and get a wall beast near stairs in D11 I'm lvl 15 dammit!

I guess I'm just a little out of date with adom and have play a style that is pretty uncommon - I rush through everything because I've won several times and I'm lazy and that used to work. I often don't train with missiles, I don't put myself at unnecessary risk with high level monsters, and I prefer melee heavy characters over wizards or shooters. On and on. Things that make the game in a way more challenging for myself but also more enjoyable. And this used to work pretty well but the changes just put a dent in my style.

Still, there are some monsters that I feel should be rarer a guess? But adom is a game where the RNG is hard so I'll adapt over time. Maybe.

I tend to travel in the most direct path that gives me the most direct benefits. Previously, because of the strange XP distribution things worked better with that playstyle.

I'm a lazy powergamer or a munchkin or whatever. So I suppose for me the lategame being harder just means the game is better balanced? Harder to rush?
Completed: All Races, All Classes. Twice.
Fastest Run: Dwarf Mindcrafter - 34803 turns. No wand of tele.
Challenge Games: C- CK (stupid ending), Platinum Girdle x10, Westside Story, Team Teleport - illiterate troll barb, Scroll of Omnipotence obtained
    ULE - DE Archer

I play mostly melee but in my book that includes training range for use vs some of the more ugly stuff and things I'm not supposed to touch (because of dooming/paralyze/stat drain etc).

The late game being harder probably means you skipped a lot of stuff and thats fine, did you get anything from dark forge? casino? smithing? ice queen? random dungeons? bug temple? library? Mino maze?
Most are skippable but if you skip all and don't train missiles it will of course be a lot more difficult.
You'll probably also be a bit underleveled.

But ...I mean it's a single player game, any way that you consider a fun way to play is valid.

depends what class you are playing. if you are playing a duelist? sure its easy and a cake walk. Or a wizard. Yup easy.

try playing a merchant/fighter late game it does become quite hard.
    Wins:
Gnome Assassin / Dwarven Paladin (ULE) / Ratling Duelist (UNE) / High Elf Archer / Gnomish Wizard x ~5 / Gray Elven Wizard (UCG) - Archmage / Gnomish Weaponsmith / Grey Elf Elementalist / Dwarven Priest / Trollish Barbarian / Drakling Farmer / Mist Elf Wizard / Human Beastfighter / Ratling Archer (UNE) / Gnomish Mindcrafter

Merchant ultra I haven't done yet, but fighter for sure.

Meh, hard thing to balance. The HC players will work around any challenge you throw at them anyway and the new guys might get frustrated. It all comes down to numbers in the end. Foe HP, own HP, own stats versus foe stats etc etc etc. I dunno, for me the game is pretty much 9.5/10 finished if I manage to grab the fire orb. I mean tier I'd laugh my ass off if someone would bet against me not finishing the game ultra past that -tier.

I'm not even trying to be cocky or anything, it'st just the way it is. And I'm not even sure if that's a bad thing either.

You're a distinguished veteran so I may as this: How is a fighter so hard compared to other classes? I have no experience from other than Archer and Fighter doing the endgame so this is just a question, not disagreement.

Also I would love to hear people's opinion on two-handed weapons because I take just too much damage when leaving the shield slot empty. Got crowned with Death's Blade which was not good even compared to Rolf axe (without Rolf shield). I'm absolutely certain two-handers are better at killing stuff but if i can wipe great white wyrms and greater balors with rolf axe, why bother? There is a big distinction ofc because I do have Protector in my left hand but the sheer damage Rolf does seems enough for the rest of the game.

Also... How do you get Sun Messenger from the casino if it costs 1.5M gold and I'm crowned lawful already? I don't seem to have a carrying capacity even with blessed girdle of greed.

Fighters are a pure melee class, but they have shitty skills and, unlike other melee classes that get huge bonuses to damage output and/or DV as they level (see Assassin, Barbarian, Beastfighter, Monk, Duelist), their damage doesn't really scale well over time, either. There are weaker melee classes, like Thief, Merchant, or Farmer, but they generally get a bunch of interesting or useful skills and abilities to compensate. Also, rangers are pretty much just fighters but with much better skills and class powers, which makes fighters seem kind of redundant.

Honestly, I love most of the classes in ADOM - to the point where I've had a Merchant UNE, an Assassin UNE, and a Farmer ULE and am trying to ascend a Hurthling Thief at some point - but the one class I've never spent much time playing is the fighter. Fighters just kind of suck, IMO.

    ---

For the casino: the carrying capacity from the girdle of greed increases with the amount of gold carried.

No in built range/magic. 4 two-handed crowning gifts (two other are good). Really shitty class powers. Overall, I think thief is probably worser class but they at least get free alertness and crit stuns.

Gamble... with blessed girdle your carrying cap increases with picked gold so you might need to pick up gold in few takes. Although,1.5m should be pickable
So far rolled 15 casters with RoDS and shamelessly killed them within 200 turns. For eternium glory!
    (after 15 I stopped counting...)

FWIW, Sphara, if you're looking to try a new melee class and like fighters, I highly recommend trying an assassin. I spent a decade or more ignoring the assassin class in ADOM before finally giving it a try and having probably by favorite game I've played so far. I did a pretty detailed write up of that game here if you want some tips on how to start, or are just interested in reading my terrible writing.

100% agreed. Fighters do suck and are uninteresting to play. The most boring class.
