    Default First win Hurthling Archer

    Hello everyone

    This was supposed to be sort of an exploration game but ended up getting my first win. I had never ever tried ranged combat in this game. Took me about 2 minutes to realize throwing stones is ridiculously strong and I can push this far. My farthest before this was some super-corrupted ratling who barely killed Snake from Beyond.

    Found sling of long shot or whatever and that made things even easier. It got burned but regular sling felt just as good.

    First ever crowning for me. That was problematic. It just felt I couldn't get past 'favors greatly' until I decided to gather every penny and sac it all at once. Goddess gave me the Whirlwind and then I knew I can win this. Everything started dropping like flies.

    Greater vault in FGJC5 was giants. Had some close calls there but never dropped way below 100HP. Man, I was under the impression those titan's quarrels were accurate but with 70DV I evaded most of them. 9 titans later Haggar's cave felt like a joke. Vault yielded Brannabin cloak and scorched spear. Cloak was helpful for some time but it drained food at annoying rate.

    Midgame came the biggest problem. I had no idea how to work over Tower of Flames without Ring of Ice. I thought registering here then and ask here if you veteran players know what to do. I was just too much of a chicken going there with just artifacts equipped. So I visited every goddamn place in the game. 5/5 random dungeons (didn't do Ancient or Crumbling to the end), Coc to wall of flames (told Khelly to die), just every place but the Rift. Got a master idea. I have 2 exchange potions, why not try dipping some rings in good DL area. Result? Brainfarting and proceeded to drink one exchange potion. Took my strength from 26 to 11. Overburdened! status on in mid-deep CoC. Got Girdle of Carrying, blessed it and got to strained. Went back to FGJC to kill giants and got back to somewhere around 18-19.

    I had such good intrinsic from pool that I didn't touch them but after everything was tried I started draining them. And eventually got the wish that went for Rings of Ice. ToEF was so ridiculously easy with level 31 Hurthling Archer that it made me think I could have probably done it with just artifact equipment

    Rest of the game was uneventful except one 'minor' slip. Cleared D:45 red dragon vault without losing more than 100 HP and that just because I got bored slinging and sometimes meleed ancient dragons. Throughout the game I had barely wielded Chaos orbs. By the time D:45 vault was done I noticed, 'hey, this one thing gives me +10 STR'.

    In Mana Temple happened my 'slip'. Cleared it without losing HP and then started shooting Nuurag with humanoid ammo. He didn't last long. Cleared most of the room and took the Orb. It was on a chaotic altar coz Nuurag never moved and after I picked the Orb, Greater Chaos Servant came to a view.. He did not sacrifice me, I don't know why. Lucky me, I guess.

    On D:50 I killed everything. Used humanoid slayers on balors and they fell pretty easily. The most annoying monsters there were actually Chaos Warriors. Even with whirlwind they took plenty of shots before going down and there were lots of them.

    Afterthoughts:

    By the time I passed Eternal Guardian I remembered this is a raven star sign character. After all the searching for Ring of Ice with Rolf axe on my hand, why did it never passed my mind to get RCT?

    Missed the Boots of divine messenger, Perion's plate and Justifier. Boots could have helped but I went without shoes the whole game coz hey, that's how hurthlings are supposed to go

    D:49 gift was Kinslayer, never used it.

    Satanic amount of HP for my first win. Should have gotten 333 PP there.

    This was my second most time-consuming roguelike game ever. Over 28 hours. Only my first angband win 20 years ago took longer.

    Ok, that's it. Feel free to comment or criticize anything. I'm still a noob in this game in so many ways so every remark is welcome.

    Surprised you didn't max Tactics, or clean your corruptions on leaving Ancardia.

    Also you had Herbalism, but looks like you didn't use it to boost your dex - which helps on missile attacks.

    I just finished a Dwarven Archer too, and loved using the level 50 archer ability to mow down rows of creatures on the final level. Flat out assault on the Chaos Gate, and able to strike down summoners from afar, even thru their summons is awesome.

    Herbs are one of the many things in the game I'm just learning to take advantage of. All I knew was I was supposed to eat morgia roots and use spenseweed for healing (barely used the latter). I didn't care about the overall score, just wanted to get out. I thought leaving with Hawkslayer would give some message but it didn't. Not that I got any help of the guy. Left him on near-ground levels of CoC and picked him on my way when gate was closed.

    Yeah and about the penetrating ranged attack of 50 lvl Archer... I don't think I could have cleared D:50 without it. At least it would've been much harder given how many rocks/bullets got smashed there.

    @GCar: Maybe it wasn't the most impressive combo for the first victory, in fact I'm pretty sure it's one of the easiest
    I'm going for my second straight win atm. Unbelievable greater undead vault experience on FGJC5 as High Elf Fighter. Cleared it meleeing and with almost no stat loss until the VERY last lich king behind the secret door. That guy confused me of course first, then summoned pack of ratling warlords. They took both my weapons and the hell broke loose. Lost over 20 points of Dex, 15 points of To among other things. Still recovering but I'm on my way of doing the winning streak here.

    Sun's Messenger + True Aim (monster drop) combo is jaw-droppingly overpowered. Zero challenge after I found the latter.

    Had Executor and Aylas Scarf in D:46 greater vault but I didn't want to go through the tedium of another GUV.

    Air Temple was annoying. Yul retreated to the left side of the level instead of coming at me. Summoned great karmic wyrms and doppelganger kings among others and there was also a beehive that seemed to spawn endless swarms.

    Congratulations, High elf fighter is a very attractive combo if you want to play safe non caster, no op stuff but no real weakness and with crowning chance for sun's messenger (because elf).

    And as you probably noted, after the first win the game doesn't feel as difficult anymore.
