    Cool Ironman strategy request

I'm trying to get the Ironman achievement, but have not been able to get far enough.

For a while, I was trying Farmers, because the herbalism and gardening can cover healing, food, and stat boosts.
But they don't seem to have the Boom needed to survive at deeper levels.

What have other folks done to make this happen.

Also, are the any hidden gotcha's? Text makes it sound like you need to go down the stairs once you see them, but I was unsure if that is enforced or not.

    Thanks!

For the purposes of the Steam achievement you are allowed to freely ascend and descend. Obvious choice would be some flavor of full caster which can safely farm the upper ID for spellbooks. Invisibility and teleportation allow you to avoid a lot of enemies and offensive spells let you kill things without needing good equipment. Can also farm easy areas for resistances and teleport control.

Crystal shields start dropping at ID: 18, and chaos knights start showing up not long after, which lets you pick up eternium gear well before it could drop randomly. Not sure how consistent this part is, but it was helpful for my successful run.

Ah, ability to go up makes a vast difference. I was imagining it was like the weekly challenge game. That would be an insane achievement.

Had a great grey-elven wizard going - level 17, loaded with spells, found holy water & all.
Wasn't paying attention while going over ice on a river level, fell thru and drowned.

    Boo!

A month later, finished my ironman challenge. Dark Elven Wizard, went crazy on the magic-missile.
    Magic Missile : 648, 4pp (Effectivity: +49)
Apparently as a Treasure Hunter, magic missile is a great way to preserve loot!

I thought traditionally ironman required you to descend stairs as soon as you saw them. I mean if you sit there and scum stats, gear and levels in ID, then that is not a challenge at all.

Magic Missile is the best attack spell in the game.

I tried doing it as a never go up mode, and that was impossible. Doing it in general was tedious and still a bit difficult.

You have notable restrictions, limited anti-corruption potential, etc.

I just went crazy on the learning, mana, and perception

Then you didn't really do the ironman challenge.

I don't think there is much enjoyable in 'true ironman'. IIRC, I did as drake wizard (drake for lower Pe). Spent quadrilion time above I10... mostly leaving one room and farming the rest of the level for respawns...untill you get enough book and stuff.

If you do it properly it is rather reliable and really boring. I'd rather do it with up allowed.
So far rolled 15 casters with RoDS and shamelessly killed them within 200 turns. For eternium glory!
    (after 15 I stopped counting...)
