Grrrr. Pre-crowning.

My last two pre-crowns have been the freaking crossbow and then Mr. Thunderstroke!! Fitting, but USELESS! This second one was a neutral pre-crown without herbs and as such took a freaking insane amount of time. GRRRR.

My last precrowns weren't too exciting either. Received the artifact pickaxe with a monk (no use at all because he can kick down walls of course).

What I had to learn about precrowns is to count on getting the black tome. If you get anything better, you should be happy. Even consider skipping precrowning if you don't feel like spending a lot of time and getting no reward.

Well that was dumb of you :P Precrowns only have about a 50% chance of being something good. If you get something nice the first time then be happy and don't bother with a second - you're more likely to be disappointed, especially with the amount of effort a second takes.

From his post it doesn't sound like it was on the same PCs, Grey. He didn't say anything about using them together, just that it was fitting. So I'm guessing different games there

They were in separate games so I didn't have to spend the extra effort. I haven't ever spent the time to get more than 1 pre-crown. Like you said, it's just not worth it for a crappy artifact. I was just frustrated that two times in a row I had gotten really bad artifacts. There are still artifacts that I have never seen or have only seen once and I have been playing for 10 years! I want some new toys!

I Just got it with a crowned assassin. Freakin lame when you have a 60% chance of getting a slaying weapon imo. But more useful to the assassin since i like to play it like an archer most of the time. Now to milk those damn quarrels.

Far Slayer is a fantastic artifact. Especially among the set of precrowning gifts, there are only maybe 5 better.

If you want new artifacts, play a class you've never played before and get crowned. Most of the artifacts you've never seen are probably crowning only gifts. Or try for the platinum girdle...

Yeah man, don't go puttin' hate on the Far Slayer - it's an amazing weapon, and I've never been disappointed to receive it (quite the opposite). The to hit and damage modifiers even make up for poor skill in crossbows, turning any character into an extremely proficient archer. I also tend to find more bundles of slaying quarrels in the game than slaying arrows, though indeed regular quarrels are more difficult to get. Still, it's rare for me to play a char that doesn't use both bows and crossbows extensively throughout the game.
