I got a new machine recently and tried to play ADOM on it. Alas, this is a 64 bit machine and ADOM apparently isn't compiled for that. Anyone know any workarounds?
Thanks...

I have never before used a 64 bit PC, so take this
with a grain of salt.
Dos emulators or virtual machines should work if
there is no 'run in compatability mode' option. If
you go with virtual machines, I can say that I have
used, VirtualBox-1.6.0-Win_x86.msi and it worked
OK for me, but too slowly considering all the other
tasks I wanted to run at the same time. Actually,
I only had a Win98 installation disk handy. If I
had a Win95 disk handy, I might still be using that
today, as it wasn't much too slow : )
"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."
Any 32-bit OS that supports DOS programs will continue to
support them when running on a 64-bit computer.
My understanding of the issue is that Microsoft dropped
support for DOS emulation in the 64-bit versions of Windows.
You have a couple choices:
- Run a 32-bit version of Windows (if you have less than
4GB of memory, there's little point in using a 64-bit
OS anyway)
- Install a 3rd party DOS or PC emulator, such as the one
gut linked.
- Install a 3rd party Linux emulator, such as ADOM SAGE,
and then use that version of ADOM.
- Use the 'winbeta' release of ADOM (exactly how many years
has Windows ADOM been considered a beta for? It's
pretty much finished)
- Run a different OS which is compatible with DOS or 32-bit
Linux programs. This includes Windows 3.x, DOS itself,
Linux itself, and most of the BSDs.
Another choice: play in the server via SSH
1 ULE, 1 UNE, 18 regular endings. Won with every race. Trying to win with every class. Never won with farmer, merchant, mindcrafter and thief.
On 64-bit XP I find that Sage works swimmingly. Server is also an option with Putty.
