Okay, maybe I'm just unawares of some kind of other function of altars or something, but, how does one get the "sacrificed self to the gods" message, no. 48?

I believe if you stand on an altar with no items in your inventory and hit sacrifice, it will ask if you want to sac yourself.

Have to be naked with empty pack. And coaligned with altar I think. There's an amusing message if you try doing it whilst wearing an amulet of life saving

I used ctrl-f. I just looked up "petrify" and "gorgon", neither of which turned up.
