I created the ranger. Against your advice, Silfir, I rolled a gnomish one - not sure, if it was wise, but with a grey elf, I probably would not survive for long:

    Code:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                Character Information
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Egalelage St:13 Le:10 Wi:10 Dx:16 To:19 Ch:12 Ap:10 Ma:14 Pe:16
    N=
    DV/PV: 16/2 H: 20(20) P: 4(4) Exp: 1/61 M: 167

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                Background Information
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Egalelage Race: female Gnome Class: Ranger
Eye color: blue Hair color: black Complexion: tanned
    Height: 3' Weight: 97 pounds
    Age: 104 (grown-up)
Star sign: Cup Birthday: 11/Cup (day 251 of the year)

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents were poor people. They loved you and cared for you,
although you had to hunger more than once.
As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents
seemed to have run out of luck. Their wealth was ever-declining and times
     were very hard.
As a youth you spent a lot of time in the wilds exploring woods and
generally enjoying your freedom. You had a lot of fun and learned to value
     the treasures of nature.
As a young adult you had to work a lot to finance your
apprenticeship. You were often tired and exhausted but all this was
forgotten, when you finally achieved your goal.
You decided to become a Ranger.
EDIT1: The stats are horrible. I entered the SMC and cowarded through. Inventory is likewise bad:

    Code:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                      Inventory
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total weight: 424 stones Carrying capacity: 1300 stones

    Head : leather cap (+1, +1) [+0, +0] [5s]
    Body : leather armor [+0, +2] [150s]
    Right Hand : hand axe (+1, 1d6) [50s]
    Boots : gnomish boots (+1, +0) [+2, +0] [10s]
    Missile weapon: short bow (+1, +0) [20s]
    Missiles : bundle of 11 arrows (+0, 1d6) [22s]
On UD1, there is a hyena and gnoll vault, but I left my fingers from that, jumping directly to UD2. Don't know, if it matters: FIRST KILL is a RAT.

That's it: On UD3 met a dark elven wizard, killed it with bow, then came an owlbear, missed it. Tried to run away, prayed twice, died. Sorry guys! I even forgot to create the memorial file. Maybe I shouldn't... ah forget it, I will come back to that challenge later, and see how I can do less harm.

Rangers ARE tricky. No hard feelings. It's just I have a raging boner for elven chain mail...

You are right indeed. I did not think about that chain mail.

I think, I am an early game character waster, so maybe, I won't be starting any more characters. Thinking about it, my behaviour was just plain stupid: I trapped myself between an owlbear and a lesser vault of gnolls (or the SMC), neither of which I could have defeated. In my own games, this is okay, just start over and be more lucky next time, but in a team game - no. Actually, I never ever learned how to optimize earliest game survival rates, as you easily see in this one. Kamikaze gaming is not team gaming. Sorry again. I probably will pick up one of the more sturdy characters later that week.

That darwinistic appraoch to character generation is very familiar to me - I do it most of the time myself. But, for this kind of challenge, you have to enter the VD, DD or maybe PC, or bite the bullet and do a bit of ID (bleh)... The UD is just too risky, mainly because there is no place to safely retreat to.

Do not do the UD. Maybe the SMC, to generate low-level monsters there to prepare for a later dive, or to get some levels and the blanket.

I guess I'll take Alder for a walk. Any particular strategeries anyone would recommend? I don't play druids much.

Um... Druids are spellcasters, and don't die?

Since no one is playing him at the time, I'll continue to work on Axon for a while.

Axon needed quite a bit of gentle loving care, but I think he can stand on his own now. The vault at the bottom of the PC is a mixed vault, with a stone golem I just can't damage. There's a stable patch of morgia on PC3. A lot of the moss in our inventory is cursed, I already lost a point of dex to it, and the bad news is, there is no way to harvest more for now.

I know I haven't progressed much, but slow and steady wins the race. I just noticed that Axon's history is quite grim, tortured by cruel parents then seriously ill for many years; thus his victory for the forces of balance will require even greater perseverance and resolve.

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your mother is a mighty enchantress. She is unmarried. Your father
is living in the vicinity of your mother's tower. He is a humble shepherd.
In your childhood you were tortured by your cruel parents. They
seemed to thoroughly hate and despise you.
In your youth you became seriously ill and suffered for many years.
When your disease finally was cured you were left weakened, both
physically and spiritually, and bereft of the joys of youth.
As a young adult you tried many occupations before finally deciding
on one to pursue. This has left you with a very broad base of lore.
You decided to become a Mindcrafter.

Okay, I've started up Ksiwis, the drakish fighter. Level 11, proud wielder of an adamantium dagger and a large mithril shield, plus several mediocre pieces of equipment, which together with talents brings him to 9 PV plus 1 super-PV from Immune to Pain. He also has Healing and is currently on D:5, with Puppy Cave and Village Dungeon completed. I've bypassed S:2 by accident, though. D:2 has a figurine shop, D:3 a general store.

Once I manage to get my laptop hooked up to some form of intarwebz, you'll get his save file. Just don't screw him up.

(Incidentally, he found a robe of balance [+0,+4] very early. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.)
