    Default Basic Commands

These are all in the manual in the game, but I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a printable copy somewhere. I have a friend who wants to start playing, but she was having lots of trouble with the commands and having to hit "?" then "m" every time she wants to do something is a bit frustrating.

    From the manual:

"If you would like to have a printed reference of your own keymap
bindings at hand, you can enter 'adom -r' at your command prompt.

No one has anything for this? She really seems to have enjoyed the game, but really was frustrated at having to search.

Oops. Thanks, Gut. That's great! Posted the same minute!

He copied the keymap from the manual; you could have done THAT yourself :P

Here's my version, with the useless and redundant commands snipped.

\C means Ctrl, \M means Alt, : means that you have to enter : first, the letter after

    \Ct Activate trap
    a Apply skill
    < Ascend stairway/Leave location
    Z Cast spell
    C Chat with monsters
    E Clean ears
    c Close door
    ws Continuous search
    ( Create short character logfile
    ) Create verbose character logfile
    [ Create screenshot
    > Descend stairway/Enter location
    ! Dip (something) into (potion)
    A Display and quick-mark skills
    B Display background
    P Display bill
    = Display configuration variables
    \ Display chaos powers
    @ Display character information
    / Display identified items
    :k Display killed monsters
    \Ml Display level map
    :m Display message buffer
    q Display quest status
    R Display recipes
    x Display required experience
    \Cw Display weapon skills
    D Drink
    d Drop item(s)
\Cd Drop items in a comfortable way
    e Eat
    l Examine environment
    :d Extended drop
: p Extended pay (Space so there's no smilie)
    :u Extended use
    g Give item to monster
    h Handle something
    i Inventory
    \Ci Invoke mindcraft
    \Co Issue order to companion
    k Kick
    \Cl Look
    :Z Mark spells
    I Miscellaneous equipment
    n Name monster/yourself
    ? Online help
    o Open door
    p Pay
; Pick up items primitively (fast)

    Q Quit game
    r Read
    & Recall monster memory
    \Cr Redraw screen
    O Sacrifice
    S Save and quit game
    s Search
    F1 Set tactics to 'berserker'
F2 Set tactics to 'very aggressive'
    F3 Set tactics to 'aggressive'
    F4 Set tactics to 'normal'
    F5 Set tactics to 'defensive'
F6 Set tactics to 'very defensive'
    F7 Set tactics to 'coward'
    := Set variable
    t Shoot/Throw missile
    :s Swap position with monster
    \Ca Switch auto-pickup on/off
    :t Switch the dynamic display
    \Cu Unlock door
    U Use item
    \Cx Use class power
    m Use special ability
    u Use tool
    5 Wait
    . Wait
w plus direction: Walk in that direction
w5: Walk in place = rest
    F Wipe face
    z Zap wand

And some of these are still kinda useless.

Learning the controls is the biggest hurdle, be patient with her

ADOM Guides - whatever you wanted to know about playing a certain class, but have been afraid to ask!

Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.

    > He copied the keymap from the manual;

I did? I thought I ran the Adom executable, using the 'adom -r' command.
I could have sworn it generated a specific file in my adom directory called
keyref.kbd, but I'll take your word for it : )

I had never actually done this before, as it was never hard for me to just
use the in-game manual for key referrences. I only gave it a glance before
posting it, assuming that because some parts of it made sense the rest did
also, but looking closer now, I suppose it doesn't.

:g Display name of your deity (why?)

    and

\2 Set tactics to 'very aggressive' (that's just confusing)

Some of these aren't really that helpful, are they? Your list is much more clear,
but how did you get it? Did you use a command that prints english, instead of
gibberish, or did you just actually type them out?
"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."

Ah, I see. It's just that the list that's displayed in the ingame manual is extremely similar. I copied from your list and replaced the intelligible stuff with actual keys. I also got rid of the movement commands - I'd wager that numpad movement is not something you have to look up to understand - and all the commands that I have next to never used in my life. ("Check Literacy"? I once accidentally pressed it. "You're somewhat literate." Very informative!).

Thanks guys. This will be a great help. I have never messed around with the executable file.

The list is from pressing '? k' in-game. You can use it to look up any command at any time. Would be more useful if it wasn't full of crap commands though.
