    Default Types of vaults

Well, there are lesser vaults and greater vaults. But what enemies can they contain?
    Lesser vaults:
    Gnoll+Hyena
    Orc
    Mixed
    Lesser undead

    Greater vaults:
    Dragons
    Greater undead

So what can vaults have?I can't think of much else, so help me!

The RNG is the source of chaos and corruption.

Lesser vaults can have things like golems (including iron, steel and diamond golems), or *color* dragons.

Also, lesser vaults of jellies can be quite troublesome in the early UD or CoC.

Lesser vaults can be filled with spiders. Ratlings and Kobolds as well if I remember correctly.

Lesser vaults of dark elven folk (archer, warrior, lord, wizard and priestess) are also possible, but very rare.

Spider lesser vaults also exist but i think it was already mentioned.

Also, demon vaults. Least to greater demon can be encountered there.
    Wins:

    Lvl 50 Dark Elf Mindcrafter.
Lvl 50 High Elf Assassin (Dual weilding).
    Lvl 50 Dark Elf Paladin.
Lvl 50 Gnomish Assassin (Failed ultra turned normal gate closer)
    Lvl 50 Hurthling Thief (ULE).

There's (at least) two kinds of undead lesser vaults. The easy one with zombies, skeletons and ghuls and a trickier one with things like spectres and vampires.

I might have put some creatures in medium-level and high-level lesser vaults in a wrong group. Also I'm not sure if there are 3, 4 or even more groups for lesser vaults but here are all types i can remember:

    Low-level lesser vaults:
    gnolls + hyenas
    orcs
    kobolds
    goblins (?)
    lesser undead
    mixed

    Medium-level lesser vaults:
    spiders
    dark elves
    oozes + jellies
    ogres + orcs
    greater undead
golems (lower level golems, up to an iron golem iirc)
    demons + hell hounds
    ratlings
    berserkers
    mixed

    High-level lesser vaults:
golems (higher level golems, including an eternium golem)
    frost giants + fomorian giants
    red dragons
    blue dragons
    white dragons
    black dragons
    mixed

    Greater vaults:
    karmics
    fire creatures
    giants
    undead

Lesses vaults always have 4 (IIRC) types of monsters acoording to its theme - a demon vault will have hell hounds as the weakest, then least demons, lesser demons and finally greater demons. The positions of the monsters are made according to the layout of the vault. Mixed vaults are an exception.

It might be helpful to list all these monster types and positions witht he layouts in section 0.13.13.2 of the GB. Something like

    Code:
              ##########
           ####.444444.####
        ####.333######....####
      ###....##.#....####..[.###
    ###444####....222...####444###
    #333###....222.1.222...###444[..
    ###444####....222...####444###
      ###....####....####.444###
        ####4444######4444####
           ####.444444.####
              ####.#####
(This is not an actual monster layout, just an example I quickly made without checking.)

Then list the possible monster types, like this:

    Demons

    1-greater daemon
    2-lesser daemon
    3-least daemon
    4-hell hound

    Dragons

    1-great wyrm
    2-ancient dragon
    3-dragon
    4-baby dragon

    etc.

A separate list for greater vaults has to be made, as they have different monsters and layouts and have 5 (IIRC) monster types in each vault, not 4.

You hit Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, and severely wound him.
The greater balor summons some help!
The ratling duelist disarms you. You drop your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12]. It flies to the west.
Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, picks up the blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12].
Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, wields the blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12].

I think my least favorite lesser vault has to be one full of ratling duelists/warlords etc. They can be quite a disarming PITA to clear. And of course, a fairly early (just below DT frinstance) jelly vault in ones way can also be mega annoying for PCs hoping to obtain a certain wand before the pyramid, who are yet to find a robust weapon. Even worse if it takes you a while to notice on the level. Stupid breeders.

Of course, if you are a wizard every vault is like a large gift-wrapped box of fun.

    > least favorite lesser vault has to be one full of ratling duelists

I just had one of those with my current barbarian
and I couldn't agree more. It went: disarm, crit,
disarm, crit, damage armor, disarm, crit...

    > if you are a wizard every vault is like a large gift-wrapped box of fun.

All except for golems. They are horrible for shrugging bolts.
Maybe if you have lightning ball though : )
"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."
