Default To Vault or not to Vault?

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice / recommendation. I'm currently playing on my second character that looks like it has a good chance to win (normal ending). He's a gnomish Weaponsmith (I was interested to see if smithing was useful )

Anyway, I'm currently on level 43 of CoC (doing my dive) when I come across a Greater Fire Dragon Vault. On the level before I cleared a minro Fire Dragon Vault. It wasn't too much trouble, but the final Wyrm did give me a little bit of trouble, but I was able to take her out in the end with arrows of Dragon Slaying and still ahve about 10 left.

I'm wondering if I should take the time (and the corruption) to clear the vault, or whether I should just skip it. I'm currently pretty well setup with gear, having smithed a lot of it (sitting at 85/45 on very aggressive). I'm level 34 at this point, and am using Serpent Bite as my main weapon (found in Darkforge). Also, 2 levels up I found The Hammer of the Gods being guarded by Dontar the Chaos Spider. Neutral crowning gift was the ring of immunity. I think I have 4 or 5 blessed SoCR left.

Anyway, that's probably more information than you need, but I figured I'd try and give a fuller picture. So what do you think, should I clear out the vault?

    Thanks!

That depends on the artifacts in there and how easy of a time you'll have. It sounds like you have the means, but it will take time because you're a melee character, but with 5 blessed SoCR in stock that sounds like it won't be too much of a problem (provided you aren't full with corruptions already).

I'd say it really depends on the artifacts. Read a scroll of item detection. If you see what could be valuable artifacts you're missing as of yet (like yellow bracers (bracers of war) or a dark grey missile weapon (Farslayer) or a brown or green set of armor (Nature's Companion/robes of resistance)), I'd go for it, but if your only goal is closing the gate you might well be powerful enough to do that without extra artifacts (85/45 plus emerald dagger sounds like a winner to me). Your call.

Me, I'll clear any greater vault simply because it's badass and I always try to collect all the random artifacts in my games.

You do not need to clear it to win. If your main goal is tow in than clearly leave it alone.

I'd clear it if included BoW, preserver or wyrmlance maybe. Just a quick rush in, collect stuff & leave kinda thing.

Well, I just cleared a vault like that with a necromancer equipped with well over 2000 casting points of Frost Bolt, and just over 1000 casting points of Ice Ball, plus godly stats. I got a dozen levels for it and crap artifacts (it seems Soaker haunts me in all my winner games somehow).

But it wouldn't have been necessary for winning the game in the least. If you're on the road to your first win, don't take that detour - for a melee character it's less trivial and probably not worth the risk involved if you already have stuff sufficient for winning.

You can always come back to it after closing the gate. No corruption then and you can take as long as you like to whittle down the wyrms.

If you're worried about being tough enough for your victory, I'd go for it as a way to buff up your equipment and earn a few levels. If you aren't, I'd skip it until afterwards, unless it has the bracers of war or Preserver or crown of havlor (12 PV on a helmet? hells yes) or something. Wand/scroll of item detection.

If it's a normal victory you are going for (which I think you are), there is another question... Do you have a Unicorn waiting to uncorroupt you? If so, go for it just for the levels- you have crazy DV/PV and it's not as if the fire damage is going to do anything to you at this point, so the only issue is the corrouption, after all. Use your scrolls only when you get a particulalrly annoying corrouption, get out, go see unicorn before leaving the chain. The other thing to consider is... How corroupted are you right now?
