I can't believe this thread lives on after all these years. And this, Sir, is a majestic suggestion. LOL
Anyhow, I still think TH pays off in the adjusted version. Specially for the very weak classes or anyone who might find themselves in dire trouble in the early game. Why? Flexibility to deal with the RNG whims.
Yes, extra PV or speed could save your life but ADOM sometimes just doesn't let you do that. A number of situations exemplify this: it could be a jackalwere ambush in the wild with a weak char where that extra potion of invisibility (and previously used scroll of identify) saves the char's life and he goes on to defeat great foes.
It could be that shield that dropped and provided the char with enough DV/PV to survive a tough encounter.
It could be all the tiny stuff, and often IS the tiny stuff! Like finding gloves, boots, helms, girdles and cloaks with PV rating on them to make a char buff enough to survive the early game.
And my point after all is focused on survivability. Yes, for me TH brings survivability to the table. Just like PV or Speed.
By the mid-game everyone usually has everything they need. The THunter only has more of it. But in the early game, after a VD and PC raid, you can usually count the THunter to have more reliable gear for a UD dive. Of course, one might not like this playstyle and that's OK too. But I do, and after a long break from (old) TH and now back to using it again (the new one) I find myself in love with it all over again.
