    Default Shop theft primer wanted!

    Hi all!
It's been a while since I did some shop robbing, and (due to the nature of my setup at the moment) savescumming is impossible for me.

Can anyone with a pretty complete understanding of shop robbing run by me a basic lowdown of the whole process? Here's what I'm most interested in:

    Different methods of robbing shops
(teleporting out, Invisibility, Attacking shopkeeper, Missile weapon on shopkeeper, attacking keeper from outside sight range, stunning shopkeeper, ventriloquism etc)
Whether methods make the shopkeeper/town hostile.
    Whether dwarves are summoned.
Whether the player is cursed or doomed.

Also, an 'introduction' to the easiest way of robbing 3 types of shops (dungeon, town/village, casino) with a spellcaster, another for a melee character without ventriloquism, and a third for a rogue trickster.

Sorry if that seemed specific. I don't need anything that exact, I just wanted us to put together some kind of 'guide' to robbing shops, since the information available I've just found a little scattered and often dated.
    My orc thief just died.

    "Easiest" methods (details below):
    • Potion of invisibility
    • Teleporting out (non-casino)
    • Djinni strangling (casino)
    • (Exploit) Swap robbing

    "Legitimate" methods:
    • Invisibility - if you are invisible, you steal any item you pick up until the shopkeeper notices you. You take a small alignment hit for each item you pick up this way. The shopkeeper will not be angered by this.
    • Things that cause summoning - any melee attack, any missile attack, mindcraft, any bolts, any attempt at petrification, successful use of ventriloquism, teleporting out, commanding a companion to attack the shopkeeper... most of the old exploits have been fixed. Any summoning event will curse non-chaotics (or doom if already cursed) and cause an alignment drop. Generally speaking, the rest of the town won't care if you anger the shopkeeper.
    • Duelist glove slap and scare monster - these will anger the shopkeeper without causing them to summon.
    • Djinni strangling - standing next the shopkeeper, filling any empty squares with doors, and using a ring of djinni summoning will kill the shopkeeper. Causes the shopkeeper to summon, except in the casino shop.
    • Thief level 18 power - you can attempt to shoplift any unpaid item you pick up. Failure causes summoning.
    • Wand of destruction - shop walls can be destroyed. Walking out with unpaid items causes summoning.
    • Swapping with a companion - you can prevent the shopkeeper from barring the door by ordering a companion to stay there. You can then walk out of the shop (and trigger summoning if you are carrying unpaid items).

    Shop specifics:
    • Munxip- will tolerate murder as long as you have some excuse (angered townsfolk with non-lethal means, used a companion, etc). His shop walls are sometimes diggable.
    • Barnabas- shop walls are sometimes diggable.
    • Waldenbrook- will not tolerate murder, although he is okay with angering townsfolk with non-lethal means.
    • Casino shopkeeper- shop cannot be teleported out of as long as the shopkeeper is not hostile. Djinni strangling the shopkeeper, attacking the shopkeeper in melee, and attacking the shopkeeper with ball spells do not cause summoning.

    Glitches:
    • Companion sacrifice - if you have angered a shopkeeper without directly attacking them (say by ordering a companion to attack them), the shopkeeper will become peaceful once they have killed one of your companions with a melee attack (but not if they kill a companion with a thrown coin). You can freely pick up items in the shop, as the shopkeeper will not continue running their shop (no buying dropped items or restocking).
    • Teleportitis robbing (r65 - r72) - if teleportitis causes you to teleport out of a shop, you have one turn to drop all unpaid items (:d y) before the shopkeeper gets angry. You can then freely pick up the items, and the shopkeeper will continue running their shop.
    • Swap robbing (r64 - r72) - you can use the "act reasonably" (Enter) command to get free actions. Pick up the items you want and drop them by the exit. Use Enter to pick them up without spending a turn. Move to the exit (which still counts as part of the shop). Use Enter to swap with a monster that's outside of the shop. As with teleportitis robbing, you can drop the items outside of the shop and then freely pick them back up. Alternatively, exit the shop by using Enter to cast teleport (spell, wand, or scroll).

Wait, so if you have one companion (maybe two to be on the safe side) you can sell all the artifacts to Waldy and pick them back in a few turns.

    Live and learn, man.

What happens if you dig walls and kick items out of the shop?

Shopkeepers prevent you from kicking unpaid items.

Apparently companions killed with the shopkeeper's thrown coin won't calm the shopkeeper down, although that probably doesn't matter if the companion is already in melee range of the shopkeeper. Quite useful for managing to sacrifice Waldy, on the other hand...

EDIT: The companion plan didn't pan out that well, but I did find a better method:

If an invis char picks up an item unnoticed, are they safe or are there still chances for the shopkeeper to detect that the char is carrying the item?

If there is no price tag on item you are good. Sometimes there is no message or door blocking, but price tag remains, if you walk out with such item it will count as alarm, robbery, thugs, etc.
