Block Vs. Deflect?

I've noticed that sometimes, while in melee, I get the message "You block <monster>" and sometimes I get the message "You deflect <monster>." Is there any functional difference between these two messages?

I know that when a monster's attack role lands between your base DV and your shield-modified DV, you can gain training to your shieled-skill. I thought that produced the "block" message. I haven't noticed the "deflect" message while not wielding a shield, so I presume it is also related to shields. I wasn't sure if one indicated that training marks were effected, and the other meant no training. But most of the monsters that I'm running into have multi-attack, and I'm seeing both messages in the same round: which makes it hard to confirm by checking the weapon-skills screen.

Wasn't sure if anyone else had puzzled out the message mechanics on this?

Both seem to be randomly chosen. The messages are definitely not affected by the shield skill training. A successfull shield defense will give shield skill marks both with the "block" and the "deflect" message. And after gaining the maximum shield marks from a specific monster, both messages still appear when successfully defending with the shield without giving any more shield skill marks.
