View Full Version : Any chance for debian build of ADOM?

The only way I can play this on my tablet is to use jaakos' ssh server.

I do have Dosbox on it but ADOM runs way too slow (one step takes around 2 - 3 seconds).

I can install something called "easy debian" which in theory could work on an armel .deb build.

Actually, if there was even a chance for a Maemo 4, Diablo OS release, my life would be perfect! :D

I'm asking too much though, aren't I?

Oh well, hopefully it didn't hurt to ask. :)

What's the problem with ADOM 1.1.1 for Linux (ELF, libc6) adom-111-elf.tar.gz (http://www.adom.de/adom/download/linux/adom-111-elf.tar.gz) ?

I'll ask about it over at the forum for my device.

I'll post back with their response.

Thanks for the link!

Okay, this is the response I received.

Nope. It's compiled for linux, which is a nice start, but it's still compiled to run on an x86 processor, not arm which is what's in the tablets.

So no such luck.

Any other possible suggestions?

The precompiled exec runs fine on my EeePC - should be perfectly okay on your Debian build (or any other Linux distro). I've not been able to get ADOM Sage to work on my netbook though, so I still use the server for it.

Edit: I stand corrected - didn't realise you were using a different processor. Guess the server is your best bet.

Hah, I wonder if compiling Sage (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php?t=660) yourself will work. Probably not, but if I had an armel I'd try it.

I asked on this and got the following response:

"ADOM Sage requires that the Linux version of ADOM be installed in the same directory for it to work."

You'd still need a binary compiled for arm. Front-ends are normally just that, front ends to the software. So the actual software still has to be ported first.

So for my handheld, it's either a debian build or I need to look at purchasing a new device.

Honestly though, if jaakos keeps his server up, I really shouldn't have any complaints. :)

Okay, I'll just ask this for the last time.

Does anyone know Thomas well enough to see if a Debian build is even possible?

With all of the smartphones, tablets and netbooks gaining in world wide popularity, I wouldn't be the only one that could benefit from such a universal build. :)

Thomas is currently helping make iADOM. I would not hold out hope too much, I think; iPhones are a fair bit more popular than Debian as far as I'm aware.

Well someone should generate some fake numbers and pass that along to him by saying Debian users are in the billions. :D

It isn't that you need a Debian build, it's that you need an ARM Linux build. (Or the source code so you can compile your own, but let's not open that can of Greater Karmic Wyrms right now.) The Linux distro doesn't really matter, its the processor architecture that's causing you trouble.

To be fully frank you have little to no hope of being able to get Thomas to release an ARM version of ADOM any time soon. Getting in touch with him isn't easy, he won't release the source to anyone, and he probably doesn't have an ARM computer himself to build it on.

Well shoot then.

I'm not the ADHD type that asks for something and then moves on to something else shortly thereafter.

I tried getting ADOM optomized under Dosbox on my tablet for almost six months.

I finally gave up after my best results were having my character take one step every two seconds. I still played a few games at that speed though.

Anyway, I'll let my dream die later tonight.

If Thomas is working on an iphone port, I guess I could always steal the wife's when she's not looking. :)

????????

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QEMU

says "Currently officially supported host architectures are x86 and AMD64 only, however there exists in-development code for ARM,"

Now, technically, you don't need an ARM computer to make an armel build - just a cross-compiling toolchain. It's done often enough to be considered 'straightforward', I think. ex http://www.emdebian.org/tools/crosstools.html

I do belong to that caste of people who would kill to get ADOM running on their nokia tablet (N900 in my case). :P

If only the source were released, we could get it running pretty much anywhere. By the way, I envy you, the N900 rocks.
