View Full Version : YAVP: Drakeling Mindcrafter

In between bouts of dying as a permanently doomed orc barbarian, I thought I would roll myself a regular game and try for an easier win, and settled on a drakeling mindcrafter. Game started out pretty well, did healer quest, UD. Midgame was uneventful... cleared DF, Pyramid, and Griffyard, then decided to hit the ToEF. ACW went down pretty easily to a combination of potions of invisibility and getting thumped with my spear of mayhem. Got RoTHK, dove down to get the water orb. Bees didn't spawn before the banshee, and while there had been a hive on D:16ish, I hadn't cleared it out, and didn't feel like running all the way back up. So I lured the banshee away from the stairs and teleported passed her. Casino didn't have anything really useful, but there was a greater giant vault on D:39 with Executor and Protector... awesome. Cleared air and earth and mana without any real problems, so I figured that I'd just go to D:50 and get the easy win at level 32. In doing so, I neglected three things:

1) I was a drakeling and didn't have a wand of fire.
2) I didn't have thick gauntlets.
3) My only source of corruption removal at the time was a single potion of cure corruption.

I got poison hands while crossing D:49. I have cleared D:50 at low speed before, of course, but my only scroll of familiar summoning was uncursed, so I wouldn't necessarily get a helpful companion. So I tried to fight my way through by hand. The jellies at the start were the worst... with 10 speed each jelly gets about 40 hits per turn, and usually at least one would connect. Corruptions started to pile up quickly, including stiff muscles and mana battery. I managed to kill the jellies and chaos mutants (although I did have to break down and use a prayer), figuring that the mutants might drop some thick gauntlets (I think it is actually warriors who drop them somewhat regularly, though). Hit the side passages, killed everything there, ending up with corruptions down to O when I hit the second lever. But I hadn't killed the balors, and I didn't feel that I could safely kill them all without being corrupted to death. So I used a rather lame strategy... I lured a chaos wizard into the top level and had him fill it with summons, then teleported to the bottom (teleport self class power saved me for sure this game), and tried to use familiar summoning + door creation to block the second lever. Familiar turned out to be a balor, who, apparently, will activate the lever just like any other balor even though he was friendly. So he was worthless. I lured more monsters, a chaos warrior and a bunch of ghost lords, over to the second lever, got one to stand on it, and teleported away for the cheesy win.

Despite being a mindcrafter, I would say I basically never used mindcraft passed the ToEF except for using teleport self on D:50.

Nice win. At least you got the doors and monsters way to work, I lost a drakeling monk who could not get that way to work before he was killed by balors.
